Interview: Dolly Ave discusses upcoming tour and Anime Expo appearance

Rising singer Dolly Ave has been gaining a slew of attention since the release of her 2023 debut album This Is Our Time. This summer, the artist will embark on a headlining tour across the country in support of recent singles “The Spell” and “Bad Brain.” We had a chance to talk to her about the upcoming trek and forthcoming appearance at Anime Expo.

MP3s and NPCs: You recently released the single “The Spell.” What’s the meaning behind that song?

Dolly Ave: I was going through a lot of turmoil in my personal life, yet I couldn’t share that side of myself in conversations. It’s always easier to express myself in the form of a song because I can share my true feelings without needing to confront my feelings with another person. That’s how the song came to be. It’s a conversation with myself about keeping the performance up of a smile.

MP3s and NPCs: Last month, you unveiled “Bad Brain” with a music video directed by Patrick Le. What was it like working on the visual?

Dolly: I had a lot of fun. When you’re on a positive set it feels like playing. Because I had some upsetting experiences on set with my former releases, I took the creative lead for this release. I sacrificed a lot of my comfort at the time because I was still new to music. Now I know where to focus my energy.

MP3s and NPCs: You recently hosted an AAPI Women in Music event in Los Angeles. What was it like being part of such an important event?

Dolly: It reminded me of my why. I think of Mister Rogers’ quote often about always finding the helpers. Helpers are always present, even in the midst of great darkness.

MP3s and NPCs: You’ll be performing at Anime Expo as part of their Beer Garden lineup. How excited are you to be part of such a massive convention? Are you an anime fan?

Dolly: I love and appreciate Japanese culture. Growing up in Missouri, discovering Anime was a core memory for my family and me. I am so excited to perform with my band and cosplay. We have a lot of great songs in store!

MP3s and NPCs: Following Anime Expo, you’ll be heading out on tour. What are you most looking forward about that?

Dolly: There is nothing quite like performing to a crowd. I look forward to playing these songs I’ve held onto for quite some time and becoming a better performer. I also really love the personalities of everyone joining me on tour. It’s going to be fun.

MP3s and NPCs: You’re currently working on your new studio album. What can fans expect from the forthcoming release?

Dolly: Fans finally get to see my growth in music. I’m ready for you to discover me!
