If you were planning to pick up a physical copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 and expecting a disc inside the box, you might want to sit down.
Rockstar has confirmed in its official GTA 6 press release that the physical version of Grand Theft Auto 6 will contain a download code inside the box rather than a physical disc.
The physical edition will be delivered from November 12, a week ahead of the November 19th launch date, specifically to allow buyers to pre-load the game ahead of release. It aligns with the general release timing details, and also GTA 6’s price reveal.
Is GTA 6’s physical version even physical?
It means that for all intents and purposes, the physical box is essentially not a physical version. You’re pretty much getting a box and cover art, but that’s about it.
For a game of GTA 6’s scale, this is unlikely to go down smoothly with a portion of the fanbase. Physical media collectors, players in areas with slower internet connections, and anyone who buys physical for the resale or trade-in value will all have legitimate grievances here.
Especially with GTA 6 seemingly a single-player game to begin with, as GTA Online is currently nowhere in sight based on PS and Xbox store tags.
It’s worth noting this isn’t entirely unprecedented. Several publishers have moved toward download codes in physical packaging over recent years, particularly as disc drives have been removed from base console models. Yet it still seems odd to call something physical when there’s no physical game that you actually own.
It comes with concerns for fans that arguably the biggest game of all time is now at the mercy of digital rulings. GTA has historically upgraded its GTA 5 copies on digital stores to complete editions, leaving a legacy version intact. That’s what pressure groups like the Stop Killing Games movement are somewhat about, trying to preserve a base state of a game, alongside games effectively dying when developers turn digital games offline forever.
