Throughout my many years of playing Pokémon games, I have only successfully encountered and caught a Shiny Pokémon once, not including any Shinies received in trades or through promotional events. Shiny hunting is, and I say this with no intended hyperbole, the bane of my existence, and I dreaded the mere notion of attempting it in the sequel to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
However, it seems as though Game Freak has extended a small, yet significant mercy to those of us who have not been blessed by unusually-colored Pokémon over the years. Based on analysis performed by various Pokémon YouTubers, as well as users on the Legends: Z-A Subreddit, we now know with confidence that, when a Shiny Pokémon spawns in the game, it will not disappear, ever.
Shinies Won’t Disappear Until You Directly Interact With Them
To be more specific, according to an X, formerly Twitter post mirrored on the Legends: Z-A subreddit, once a Shiny Pokémon spawns into the world somewhere, it will stay there until you directly interact with it in some way, whether by battling it or attempting to catch it. If you see a Shiny, but don’t interact with it, it will stay right where it is, even if you fast travel away or the time of day changes. Several users in this Reddit post confirmed this information, with one user finding a Pikachu and having it remain where it was even after three rank missions.
This, unfortunately, does not mean you can populate the entirety of Lumiose City with Shiny Pokémon by attempting to game spawn systems. According to YouTuber Austin John Plays, the game’s memory will preserve up to 10 Shiny Pokémon spawns simultaneously. This means you could, in theory, game the system until a healthy spattering of Shinies appear, but once you hit that cap, you’ll have to either catch or battle them to make more show up. Additionally, as a reminder, Legends: Z-A does have an autosave system, so you probably can’t save scum if you fail at catching a Shiny.
Even so, just the fact that Shiny appearances are no longer split-second random occurrences will undoubtedly save the Shiny Hunters of the world some grief.
