EA Loses Rep With Battlefield 6 Community After 'Colorful Mess' Skins Revealed

Leading up to the release of Battlefield 6, there was one question on everyone’s mind: Will the game have realistic skins, or will this eventually be another Fortnite/COD-ification of a beloved FPS series?

Okay, there was a more pressing matter at hand: will the game be any good? Spoiler alert: it is. Our review said that Battlefield 6 is “the first Battlefield that is ready to dominate the multiplayer scene after years of Call of Duty tyranny.”

I’m serious about that skin comment, though! One thing that has upset some traditional FPS fans is the guest appearances that take place within Fortnite and Call of Duty. I don’t know about you, but the concept of seeing Jay and Silent Bob duke it out on the battlefield is, well, dumb. Then again, I’m a longtime Magic: The Gathering player, and I can only sit back depressed about what Universes Beyond is doing to the game I loved.

Anyway, that’s right: Battlefield 6 skins, and the promise from earlier this year that they’ll remain grounded. Here’s what design director Shashank said on the matter:

I don’t think it needs Nicki Minaj. Let’s keep it real, keep it grounded.

Case settled, right? Well, maybe not; Battlefield fans aren’t happy about one of the newest skins.

Battlefield 6 Fans Express Their Displeasure With The Game’s Newest Skin

Don’t take my word for it, let’s go straight to the source and hear it from the fans!

It’s a far cry from how traditional skins looked in Battlefield 1, and as a result, it has people wondering if Battlefield 6 won’t become what they’re hoping.

“This game feels like it’s missing something and I hope it’ll be added to so in a year or two we really have a complete game,” one fan explains. “But HOW they add to it will become the legacy. The launch legacy rn is, it’s fun. It’s a bit ADHD hyper for me personally but I know it’s a lot to do with the maps also what mode you’re playing.”

They then take this opportunity to look back fondly at the overall Battlefield 1 presentation. “BF1 felt more like a cinematic experience. A work of art comparatively. From the maps to player models, the environment they created to the sounds of a weapon firing. It just felt more polished and all around better. But this is kind of what’ll happen with mass layoffs and budgeting to squeeze every cent out of stuff. You see it in every aspect of our world rn.”

That last point is perhaps the most notable part of their take. Mass layoffs and budgeting have plagued the industry for quite some time, and Battlefield 6 publisher Electronic Arts was just acquired by private equity for a lot of money. I’m not an expert in private equity, nor have I ever worked in the industry, but I’m fairly certain that if you invest $55 billion, you’ll want to see a return on that investment at some point.

Are people overreacting? Possibly; not everyone thinks the sky is falling, which is honestly the correct statement. I’ll let u/Vegetable-Dog5281’s words of wisdom speak for itself: “You see it, go ‘wow thats dumb’ and then move on with life without ever thinking about it again.”

Is this going to stick out like a sore thumb at first? Probably. Is this an indication that Battlefield 6 will eventually fall victim to Fortnification? I’d like to think not, especially since the Battlefield 6 live-action trailer literally made fun of that very thing.
