BioWare’s Shutdown Overshadows Mass Effect Series Continuation

BioWare closes its doors, ceasing the next Mass Effect game but leaving the Amazon series moving forward without it.

The gaming industry’s current batch of news reveals a significant, albeit somber, shift for a venerable developer: BioWare has officially shut down. As reported by PC Gamer, the studio’s closure brings an end to over three decades of influential game development, renowned for titles like Baldur’s Gate and Mass Effect. Despite Electronic Arts holding the rights to BioWare’s intellectual properties, it has cancelled the next Mass Effect installment, casting doubt on future non-sports-oriented projects from EA.

Interestingly, the shutdown does not signal the end for the beloved space opera, at least in terms of its television counterpart. The Mass Effect series, in production at Prime Video since 2024, will reportedly continue, according to sources who spoke to IGN. This continuation, set post-original trilogy, presents a bittersweet extension of the Mass Effect universe, persisting without the direct involvement of its original creators.

A ripple effect of BioWare’s closure is felt within the community of Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR). According to PC Gamer, lead writer Caitlin Sullivan Kelly expressed disappointment over the studio’s farewell message, which omitted mention of the long-running MMO that has supported the studio for nearly 15 years.

New Game Updates and Developments

In other updates, Valve continues to breathe new life into classic franchises with a new hero for the Deadlock update, bringing back the “TF2 glory days” with an explosive character named Deadman Danny, as reported by PCGamesN.

Deep Field’s Abiotic Factor, which launched its 1.0 version last year, is set for a robust schedule into 2027. As per Rock Paper Shotgun, planned updates will see the introduction of official mod support and a major DLC pack, “Entropic Break,” set in tropical locales.

Linux Gaming Advances

Linux users will soon be able to enjoy playing Fortnite natively, thanks to Epic Games’ overhaul of its Easy Anti-Cheat system, a move detailed by Rock Paper Shotgun. However, support for the Steam Deck remains unconfirmed, indicating ongoing challenges in making mainstream gaming accessible across varying hardware.

These developments offer both glimpses of new content and technological advancements, while simultaneously marking a reflective moment for the legacy of BioWare and its contributions to the gaming landscape.
