Remember when every new blockbuster movie was accompanied by a loosely related video game? Apparently, James Cameron remembers, and so we’re getting a new Avatar game alongside his upcoming movie Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Well, sort of. Technically, the game being released on Dec. 19 (the same day Fire and Ash flies into theaters on the back of a Toruk) is an expansion of 2023’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, but based on a new trailer, it practically looks like a brand-new video game.
The trailer for the upcoming expansion, titled From the Ashes, highlights perhaps the biggest change coming to Frontiers of Pandora: third-person gameplay footage. (A free update is also coming to the main game, even earlier than the expansion, shifting the entire experience to a third-person perspective.) Luckily for us all, Frontiers of Pandora with a third-person perspective looks wonderful. In fact, we kind of feel like this should have been what the game was from the very beginning.
Per the trailer’s description, the expansion will also offer improved mechanics for piloting the Banshee and revamped combat, though no details about the combat have been given thus far. However, a full gameplay walkthrough of the expansion will drop on Nov. 20 according to Ubisoft, so chances are we’ll learn more then.
Much like what we’ve seen of the movie itself, the majority of the color palette in the From the Ash expansion is more muted than in Frontiers of Pandora, with the neon-like glow Pandora replaced by billowing clouds of smoke, flames, and debris scattered across the landscape. It’s still beautiful, but in a creepy way. And it’s made all the better with a third-person perspective that lets you view even more of what’s around you.
The sneak peek also includes plenty of action, plus a variety of different types of robotic soldiers and large-scale mechs, as well as Pandoran foes. In the climactic moment of the teaser, we see a massive creature that looks like a cross between a wooly mammoth and a tree — literally, it has sprouted green leaves on either side of its head.
In the From the Ash expansion, players will take on the role of So’lek, a Na’vi we met in Frontiers of Pandora. While he has joined up with the Sarentu, the original game’s player character, we learn the human-run Resources Development Administration (RDA) has partnered with the Ash clan of Na’vi to carry out an attack on the region. When So’lek awakes from the battle, he finds “a scorched land and his new-found family scattered.” From there, he sets out to find his chosen family and seek revenge on those who destroyed his home.
While this all sounds exciting, perhaps the best part is that Ubisoft held off until less than a month to start touting the expansion. Now we don’t have to wait for ages to get our hands on it. Instead, we’ll be knee-deep in new Avatar content — video game and movie — for this holiday season. And we’ll be playing in third-person even sooner, as that free upgrade launches on Dec. 5.
