A high security lockbox is a special, extremely rare crate in The Outer Worlds 2. There are many spread across the planets you visit, and each one holds a strong piece of gear or a top-tier weapon for your character. Although you can solve many situations in the game by talking your way out of trouble, you eventually have to fight, and having the best gear increases your chances of surviving every encounter.
Finding the lockboxes is only one part of the challenge, because opening them is also not that simple. But consider looking for every high security lockbox in The Outer Worlds 2 as part of the journey, one that we can guide you through. This is still a work in progress, but we will update it when we find more boxes.
How to open high security lockboxes in The Outer Worlds 2
Before you can start looking for high security lockboxes, you should know that advanced decryption keys are required to open them. Advanced decryption keys are rare items, and you can obtain them from multiple sources. Some are sold by vendors in major cities. Others are hidden in locked rooms or just lying around on the floor of a Protectorate facility.
You want to acquire as many advanced decryption keys as you can because you’ll need multiple to open one lockbox. The lowest quantity required for one box is four, but there are some that you can only open if you have eight advanced decryption keys.
To open a lockbox, visit your ship, and check the station with all the boxes next to the exit gate. You can choose which one you will open by pressing the arrow buttons beside the lockbox.
Where to find high security lockboxes in The Outer Worlds 2
You can find lockboxes basically anywhere in the game, making the task of tracking all of them quite difficult. Once you find one, just interact with it, and it will be added to your inventory.
This is still a work in progress, and we will update the list once we find more boxes. Below you find a list of items you obtain by opening high security lockboxes and where to find them in The Outer Worlds 2.

- Native Species (Paradise Island)
- Murder’s Best Friend (Paradise Island)

VALERIE’s Mod Kit (Paradise Island)
The first lockbox you receive in the game gives you VALERIE’s Mod Kit, which you need to upgrade your personal robot. It’s added to your inventory automatically, so you just need to be in your ship to find it waiting to be opened, which requires four keys.
Tactical Trajectile Defense-Dome (Paradise Island)
You need five keys to open the Tactical Trajectile Defense-Dome’s lockbox. To find it, you must explore the main building of the Ministry of Accuracy (west side of Paradise Island).
Once in the area, go west to find the tallest building, where you want to find the room further in the back and start climbing. Use the ladders and pipes to get to the top until eventually you can drop inside the room where the lockbox is located.
Dead Man’s Jacket (Paradise Island)
You must have five advanced decryption keys to open the Dead Man’s Jacket’s lockbox. This one is located inside the Euphoria Automech Center, a facility on the east side of Paradise Island.
You will find the box on a rack inside a locked room in the main hangar. You can hack the door to open it, but if you don’t have the level to do so, you can use the venting tube in the opened area and emerge right in front of the box.
While you can obtain this lockbox during the “Vanquishing the Vexing Vapors” side mission, you can go back and grab it later if you have access to the facility.
Manager’s Tasking Hat (Paradise Island)
You can only find the lockbox that gives you the Manager’s Tasking Hat after completing “The Mystifying Case of the Midnight Marauder” side quest in Fairfield. This quest is given by Officer Warren, who you find near the greenhouse. You need four keys to open this box.
Progress in the quest to unlock the hidden cellar where the lockbox is located.
Remote Detonator (Paradise Island)
The Remote Detonator is located inside a house on the northwest side of Westport. From the Westport fast travel, go northwest to find a house with the door blocked by crabble eggs. On the outside, you find a ramp on the left side of the building that gives you access to the upper floor, where you will find the lockbox. If you plan on opening this box, be prepared since it requires eight advanced decryption keys.
Native Species (Paradise Island)
If you go northwest of Westport, always heading upwards, you can find an area filled with red spores and Raptidons ready to devour you. Below a large rock — and guarded by a Raptidon Colossus — you find the Native Species lockbox, and opening it requires five keys. You can quickly find the place when completing “The Lab that Shouted Incoherently and Often” side quest.
Murder’s Best Friend (Paradise Island)
You must have seven keys to open this lockbox. On the north side of the island and northwest of the Vox Relay Station, you can find the Raptidon Matriarch’s cave. To find the entrance, you want to approach it from the northwest side.
Once inside, you want to make your way to the southern part of the cave, where you find the largest chamber. There’s a corpse illuminated by a yellow light, and the lockbox is right beside it.
Auto-Hacker 5,000 (Paradise Island)
Progressing in the “The Saboteur of Paradise” main quest will inevitably take you to the Vox Relay Station, where you can find the lockbox with the Auto-Hacker 5,000, and you need seven keys to unlock it. You must collect this lockbox before progressing the quest, since the place becomes inaccessible later on.
When you’re inside, after having spoken to Marshal Corbin, you need to acquire an unutilized keycard by going to a corridor on the east wing. The Auto-Hacker 5,000 will be waiting near the box with the keycard.
Bowlzerker (Golden Ridge)
The lockbox holding Bowlzerker is in the Guardian Estates area, which is west of the landing pad in Golden Ridge. The place is crowded with enemies, so be prepared to fight. With the place clear of enemies, you want to enter the room on the east side, where you will find the box on a shelf. The Bowlzerker lockbox requires four advanced decryption keys.
The Lonesome Ranger (Golden Ridge)
To find the Lonesome Ranger lockbox, which requires four keys, you need to explore the refugee camp on the west side of Golden Ridge. The quickest way is to use the Guardian Estates fast travel and head west.
You end up visiting the area during the “Arbitrary Measures” side quest, which you need to complete to recruit Tristan as a companion. The lockbox is inside the building on the south side of the camp, beside the camp terminal.
