Battlefield 6 'System Override' Skin Changed After Fan Backlash

Players are gaining ground in an ongoing war against stupid skins. With Fortnite corrupted from the start and Call of Duty often being the poster-child for ‘ridiculous things you can get sniped by‘, many fans have started to get a bit sick of unrealistic nonsense character skins.

Notably, Helldivers 2 drew a line in the sand at ‘acceptable’ skins that their community seemed to enjoy. Battlefield 6 was the most recent game to cross this line, and with rioters at the gates, they decided to relent.

A “Monster Energy” skin (that wasn’t actually associated with Monster, but rather a promotional skin for Razer) with gaudy neon-green paint that made it look like a newly revealed Formula 1 car, has been toned down to a slightly more military-appropriate forest green.

This news was shared by BattlefieldNET on X, who provided ‘before and after’ images.

The change was met fondly by fans, with a post on Reddit titled in all caps: “THEYRE LISTENING”. Other fans point out that some skins have not yet received needed changes. One blue devil in particular remains a source of controversy. That one isn’t even a crossover skin — but it is a part of marketing in-game purchases nonetheless.

Today’s change was not paired with any kind of announcement or statement from the developers at Battlefield Studios, just a simple change to darken the green on this skin, alongside other miscellaneous changes in an update.

Brands Want You To Notice Their Crossover Skins, At Any Cost

Today’s skin change from neon-green to a more ‘normal’ green is one largely welcomed by players, though it’s likely that Razer isn’t too thrilled with it. They, along with any brand doing a themed crossover with a game skin, want players to be reminded of the brand as often as possible. Bright colors do this job well, so it’s no wonder why promotional or crossover skins tend to stand out from the crowd. It’s just basic marketing.

But when a brand also becomes associated with Gamer Outrage ™, that tends not to be as great a look. The Helldivers 2 approach, only doing crossovers with brands that fit the Helldivers style, seems to have largely silenced the usual groans when crossover content gets announced. Their recent Halo 3: ODST crossover was particularly hyped, given the obvious link between Orbital Drop Shock Troopers diving “feet first into hell” and… well, everything that Helldivers 2 is.

Should momentum continue (momentum tends to do that), we may see more game studios move towards promotions that make players a bit happier. They may move at a glacial pace, with the war being fought skin-by-skin, but progress is progress nonetheless.
