The creators of PUBG have a new game on the way, and it’s definitely not a battle royale. Player Unknown Productions says machine-learning technology will play a substantial role in their upcoming projects, which aim to create massive online worlds, starting with Prologue: Go Wayback!, the first game in a three-game plan.
Prologue: Go Wayback! is a single-player exploration and survival roguelike that generates a new 64km2 map every time you start a new game. Players will traverse rugged terrain, endure harsh weather conditions, and keep themselves fed and hydrated as they make their way across the map towards the weather tower.
PUBG Creator Pivots To Exploration And Survival Games
Player Unknown Productions has dubbed their vision for the future, Project Artemis, which focuses on creating massive multiplayer sandbox worlds with some help from AI.
Go Wayback! represents our ongoing research into machine-learning models that can empower our developers to rapidly generate realistic, large environments in Unreal Engine 5 for players to explore.
PUBG Creator Brendan Greene recently spoke about the Go Wayback!, as well as Project Artemis as a whole, stating that it may take some time for people to warm up to the idea, “I expect a lot of people will hate it,” said Greene.
But that’s ok if it elicits a reaction—that’s all I want. People didn’t get [Battle Royale] at first, but then they did. And I think it’s the same with this, the goal here is creating these big, massive worlds for everyone.

Prologue: Go Wayback! will be released on November 20th for early access, and will have three different game modes:
- Go Wayback! – Chart your way to the weather tower.
- Objective: Survive – Live for as long as possible.
- Free Roam Mode – Explore as you wish.
Custom game settings, including weather tweaking and changing the time of day, have also been added, as well as a map editor that allows you to create your own maps and even import designs.
PUBG changed the game for battle royales in a lot of ways, a genre that has since become one of the most popular, and while the fate of this new machine-learning, sandbox world-creating, exploration journey remains to be seen, it’s possible that Player Unknown Productions is once again ahead of the curve, and it will be very interesting to see what’s in store for the future.
