Ever since last year when it was officially announced that Amazon would be developing a streaming series based on BioWare’s Mass Effect franchise, fans wondered if it had the guts to tell an original story and not make it about Commander Shepard, the customizable hero from the original games. In a blog post Friday, they got their answer.
BioWare executive producer Mike Gamble confirmed the show would “explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy.” The post continues, “It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story – because after all … that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?”
Ostensibly, this indicates the show could be about the peoples of the Milky Way rebuilding the galaxy in the wake of destruction left by the reapers. It could also take place hundreds of years in the future, like Mass Effect: Andromeda. “After the original trilogy” leaves plenty for the imagination. No cast members have been announced yet, but Star Trek Beyond scribe Doug Jung was tapped to serve as showrunner and executive producer in June. Daniel Casey is also a writer and executive producer on the project.
As for the next Mass Effect game, Gamble’s post doesn’t share too many details. In response to the rumors and speculation that BioWare might be sold off as part of EA’s $55 billion sale to private investors, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Gamble does stress “the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe.”
BioWare is “heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect,” teasing that the team has “a lot of universe to cover, lots of features to build, and lots of romances to figure out” for the next game. “We’re excited by what we’re building, and we promise you: when we’re ready, it’ll be a lot of fun to show.”
Various letters are italicized throughout the post, and put together they spell “URL Krogan N7.” It’s not immediately clear what this is referring to, though it’s definitely indicating something — the blog post ends with a cheeky P.S. saying, “Disclaimer: there is no secret game information to be gleaned by anything I’m saying today, I promise.”
The Krogan are featured in free artwork EA released for fans to download in celebration of N7 Day. Titled “Civil War,” the image shows various Krogan in battle. Combined with the “URL Krogan N7” message, it’s likely another tiny breadcrumb on the path towards the next Mass Effect.
Nov. 7 marks N7 Day each year, a day for BioWare and Mass Effect fans to celebrate the space opera. It’s typically when BioWare has teased the upcoming new game, like how in 2023 it showed off an N7 operative in a stylist coat. Polygon is celebrating N7 Day with a series of stories, like one championing the Mako or another apologizing to dead Krogans — rather apt with the day’s teases.
