PlayerUnknown’s New Survival Roguelike Prologue: Go Wayback! Hits Early Access on Steam

After years of development, PUBG creator PlayerUnknown has finally launched his new game, Prologue: Go Wayback!, in Early Access on Steam.

Brendan Greene, also known as PlayerUnknown, is the one behind the hit battle royale game PUBG. After leaving the studio and creating his own studio called PLAYERUNKOWN Productions, Greene and his team have been hard at work developing their new game.

Unlike his previous work, Prologue: Go Wayback! is a huge departure from the battle royale formula as it features survival gameplay in a procedurally generated world.

It’s also roguelike, so players can expect a real challenge as they try to navigate their way out of the wilderness.

Due to the game’s procedurally generated nature, each playthrough will feel unique and different. Players will have to explore the map, craft items, and manage their resources to survive.

Also, players can choose between the standard Go Wayback! mode and the more difficult Objective: Survive mode. The latter will have you managing limited resources throughout your playthrough.

There’s also the Free Roam mode which features lite survival elements, but players are still expected to manage their resources properly.

Perhaps the most exciting is the map editor feature that lets players design their own maps. They can even upload their own images on top of that!

Prologue: Go Wayback! Releases on Early Access – What You Should Know

Prologue: Go Wayback! is priced at only $19.99, a cheap price for an early access title from a small studio.

Right now, it’s on a 10% discount, bringing down the price to just $17.99.

The game’s minimum system requirements aren’t as demanding either. All you need is an Intel i5-8600 CPU and a GTX 1070 GPU to get started. The game is also fairly light at only 10Gb.

That said, if you scroll down the game’s Steam page, you’ll notice an AI-generated content disclosure that reads:

“We are developing our own in-house machine-learning model which is trained on publicly available open-source data and vetted to prevent the use of any copyrighted material. This ML model is used to generate base terrain maps in Unreal Engine 5 which are then populated procedurally with custom assets such as the trees, rivers, rocks, and hills you explore. Our artists and designers use our ML model to allow us to generate 64km2 maps that look and feel natural and realistic. The game generates a new map offline on your system every time you play.”

It’s worth noting that there’s a bit of a difference between “machine learning” and “generative AI”, as Embark Studios explained in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun.

As the game’s development progresses, various updates will be introduced such as changing weather patterns, climbing gear, gear durability, and more. Whether it will introduce a multiplayer mode or not will be up to the studio to decide.

Maybe if the game gains enough traction, that could turn into a possibility.
