Hollow Knight‘s Steel Soul mode kills you dead. And when you die, that’s it. Should have played better, idiot. It’s not something really meant for a first playthrough – hence why you have to beat the game first to unlock it.

It’s an ancient code from an ancient time. Konami games had a code, and it soon became everyone’s code – even in places you really wouldn’t expect. Hollow Knight: Silksong keeps this tradition, and if you input the Konami Code while viewing the Extras menu, you unlock suffering beyond comprehension. Fun!
Silksong’s Steel Soul mode can be unlocked by inputting the Konami Code in the extras menu, without you needing to beat the whole game first. You know, on the off chance you want your first experience through the game to be one of immense tension and torment.
While several people may have discovered this Easter Egg independently, PCGamer credits the discovery to this Reddit user, who proved to other Silksong fans that the unlock existed.
While Team Cherry Makes Things Easier, You Can Make Silksong Harder
Taking your first steps down the path of the Steel Soul would fly in the face of Team Cherry’s own direction for the game. Following many, many complaints about the game’s difficulty, the devs intend to tone things back a bit with Silksong’s very first patch.
When that patch drops, you’ll find some early-game areas a bit kinder to you. Sandcarvers will do less damage, the Moorwing and Sister Splinter bosses will be a touch more merciful, among several other adjustments.
If that’s not to your liking, a good dose of permadeath should fix you right up. And you can get it from the word ‘go’, if that’s your preference.
Does this diminish the game-completion reward of unlocking a new mode? Perhaps – though given the nature of it, the real reward involves actually beating Steel Soul mode; bragging to everyone about how you’ve got Steel Soul unlocked (but unplayed) isn’t especially impressive.
