If you’re an absolute lunatic who thinks Hollow Knight: Silksong isn’t difficult enough already, there’s a mod that might be right up your alley.
Silksong’s difficulty, and specifically how much harder it is than its predecessor, has been a major topic of conversation since it released last week.
It’s already gotten a patch to make some of the boss fights easier and reduce some Rosary costs for things like Bellway stations or benches.
One common sticking point is that a lot more regular enemies and even environmental hazards deal two masks of damage instead of just one than in the original Hollow Knight, so if that bothers you, there’s a mod made by TheLima to fix that.
The only thing is it does that by increasing it to three masks instead of two.
A Monkey’s Paw Wish For No Double Damage
The mod itself, called “No Double Damage (But better),” is pretty self-explanatory. As the description says, it “removes the boring double damage from the game skilsong [sic] by making it triple damage instead.”
But that should be fine, right? After all, you heal three masks at a time anyway, which means you can still recover from a hit with a single heal, so what’s the difference?
At time of writing, it’s got 888 unique downloads, but how many of those people knew what they were getting into and how many got bamboozled is anyone’s guess.
Still, the game clearly isn’t too hard for some people, namely the speedrunners who have already set a documented record of 1:17:05 a week after release.
If you’re struggling with Silksong and aren’t a complete sicko, there are also mods available that really do make the game easier, be it by actually reducing double damage to a single mask, introducing some more quality of life changes, or anything else.
But if you happen to be the type who wants a bit more of a challenge for a second run, but you don’t quite feel ready for the permadeath Steel Soul mode, mods like this one seem like a good way to get the slightly harder playthrough you’ve been craving.
