Want to know how Hytale mana and magic works? With likely more than one million people hopping into early access, there’s little chance you’re the only one wondering how to increase your max mana in Hytale and how to use it to cast spells. After all, there’s a mana section on the character sheet, but all is not what it seems.
Before we dig into the Hytale magic system, it’s important to remember that this sandbox game is in early access, so there are some aspects that still need more development time. While certain elements like the combat mechanics have been well thought out, featuring an expansive list of the best Hytale weapons already available, other areas will remain under construction for the foreseeable future.
How mana works in Hytale
Despite there being a mana stat on your character sheet, there is no mana system in Hytale. There are clearly plans to cast spells in the game, but it hasn’t been properly fleshed out for the first early access build.
How to cast spells in Hytale
In Hytale, magic weapons exist despite the missing mana system. You can still cast spells using staves and spellbooks, giving you ways to bathe your foes in flame and freeze them in place with frigid mists – no mana necessary.
You can craft a staff with any metal, including Copper, Iron, Thorium, or Mithril. There’s an Ice Crystal Staff and Flame Crystal Staff you can gain access to using the appropriate Hytale console command or by digging through the item menu in Creative Mode.
You’ll find enemies lobbing spells your way using spellbooks, and some even have staves like the Bone Staff and Trork Staff. Each of these weapon classes works a little differently based on whether a player or an enemy is using it. In the case of spellbooks, enemies can use them, but players can’t.
Luckily, Hytale staves work just fine without trying to increase your max mana, allowing you to fire off simple magic ranged attacks. The main attack is a basic melee swing, but the charged attack uses stamina to launch a fireball. There’s a good chance this will change to mana once the system is properly implemented.
How to craft staves
You can craft the Fire Staff and Ice Staff by heading to the second tab of the Arcanist’s Workbench. From here, you’ll need the following items:
Flame Crystal Staff crafting recipe
- 1x Ruby
- 8x Silver Ingot
- 8x Gold Ingot
- 20x Essence of Fire
Ice Crystal Staff crafting recipe
- 1x Sapphire
- 8x Silver Ingot
- 10x Azure Log
- 20x Essence of Ice
As for Creative mode, you’ll find these items in the third tab of the crafting window in your inventory. If you’re using console commands to give yourself items, Weapon_Staff_Crystal_Flame and Weapon_Staff_Crystal_Ice are the item IDs you need to call up.
Unlike the other staves you can get your hands on, the Flame Crystal Staff and Ice Crystal Staff behave like unique weapons, forcing you to use the appropriate Essence as ammunition. You’ll need to source Essence of Fire and Essence of Ice to fuel their more powerful attacks. The Fire Staff has unique click, hold, and charged attacks, while the Ice Crystal Staff has a left-click hold attack, a continuous right-click attack, and a left-click melee whack.
How do spellbooks work in Hytale?
As for spellbooks, these appear to use charges instead of stamina, essence, or mana. That means they’ll disappear after a set number of uses. That being said, they don’t seem to work just yet. The Demon, Air, and Flame Spellbook, as well as the Brown and Purple Grimoire, all have attack animations, but they don’t produce any visible effects. They’re only good for melee attacks right now.
Void and Air Grimoires exist, too, but they currently act as simple decorations, or, as their item ID would suggest, they’re consumed as a recipe – presumably to unlock the ability to craft their spellbook weapons.

When will mana be added to Hytale?
There’s been no word on the Hytale mana system from the developers at all, so it’s hard to say when mana might be added as a full feature.
