The guy who managed to put himself into Red Dead Redemption 2 using two cell phones and a rubber band last August is back at it again, but this time, he’s using Rockstar’s wild-west open world as a vehicle for Pokémon battles.
The ex-software-engineer-turned-content-creator (who goes by Blurbs online) has managed to insert Pokémon game mechanics into Red Dead Redemption 2, complete with wild Pokémon to capture, gym leaders to fight, and Pokémon-style battle menus. Rather than battling actual Pokémon, the mod sees Arthur Morgan facing off against the various animals already featured in Red Dead Redemption 2, from fish and rats to wild bears and even the Legendary Bullgator — with larger predators often attacking Arthur if he fails to capture them.
So, how did this hilariously off-the-wall mod come into existence? Blurbs tells Polygon it was a viewer request.
“I previously recreated Katamari in RDR2 and asked my viewers for other games I could try and recreate,” he told Polygon. “Pokémon came up and it sounded like a fun challenge.”
Arguably the most shocking aspect of all this is that it only took Blurbs two-and-a-half weeks to complete the project, with one week solely dedicated to coding the battle mechanics.
“Honestly, during testing it was quicker to spawn an NPC to test [the mechanics], so the poor guy ‘a_m_m_armtownfolk_01’ is basically [the] Elite Four trainer at this point,” Blurbs told Polygon of the mod’s testing phase.
But despite how quickly he created the mod, it was no small task. Blurbs says he “pretty much had to recreate Pokémon’s main feature from scratch.”
“I took a week off from streams and was pulling my hair out,” he told Polygon. “Definitely was reconsidering this project during that time.”
Still, it was worth it in the end. The self-described “creator of nonsense” says his favorite part of the mod is the Pokémon-style menus, which look hilarious against Red Dead Redemption 2‘s hyper-realistic graphics.
“I really love that I was able to nail the retro Pokémon menus/effects/vibe but in a visual masterpiece like RDR2,” Blurbs said. “The juxtaposition still makes me laugh.”
One thing that makes this creation especially unique is the fact that Blurbs has plans to release it as a mod, something he typically doesn’t do.
“I don’t release my mods because they are very complicated and not just a typical ‘mod file,'” he explained. “This one consists of a RDR2 mod and an OBS browser source that handles all the noises and UI. I figured it’d be popular enough that folks would want to give it a try, so I’m going to do my best!”
No estimate yet on when the mod will be released to the public, but when it comes to the elephant in the room, Blurbs says he’s got his “fingers crossed” that the notoriously litigious Nintendo won’t come knocking.
“I’m going to do my due diligence and not include any original music/sounds [from Pokémon] in the [final] release,” he said. “I make a lot of dumb mods based on viewer ideas. We’re doing a 2nd episode of GTA V next, so come stop by on Twitch or YouTube and give me your worst idea!”
As for his favorite Red Dead gym leaders, Blurbs says it’s a tie.
“Obviously Micah having a snake and a rat is great, but Thomas Downs is a secret gym leader and just has all poison types,” Blurbs said. “If you know, you know.”
