We are literally living in a new historic era for technology as we step deeper and deeper into artificial intelligence territory, where many industries (including gaming) are seeing a massive shift in how they view tools run by AI.
As expected, this subject has deeply divided both developers and the gaming community: on one side, some defend automation for efficiency, while others discard it entirely, believing it prejudices creativity and threatens human jobs.
Now, following the recent market instability triggered by Google’s Gemini AI, which led to significant stock crashes across the tech sector, major publishers and legendary developers are beginning to publicly speak up against the Generative AI (GenAI) trend.
Devs Defend Human Creativity Over Automation
One of the most vocal critics recently was Goichi Suda, the legendary creator known as Suda51. While promoting his upcoming game Romeo is a Dead Man, he talked about his thoughts on the subject in an interview with Eurogamer.
For Suda, if his game were created with the help of GenAI, the project would feel “fake” because there is always something “off” or “creepy” about AI-generated content, in his opinion.
13 AA Games With AAA Appeal
Sometimes it’s about the gameplay, sometimes it’s about the visuals, but it’s always about the quality, so let’s check out some double-A games.
“If I used AI to make Romeo: A.) it would have been a fake Romeo,” he explains. “People would notice something shallow about the character. He would be hard to relate to… B.) The skills and passion the humans put into their works comes across to players. It’s something people can feel – not just that it was person-made, but you can tell someone poured their heart into this.”
Suda also revealed that NetEase, the publisher behind his new game, started a research section to look into generative AI, but it eventually shuttered it and adopted a strict policy forbidding its use in their studios: “They folded that section and told their studios not use AI in games, to not use it at all.”
The developer said that he does not know the reasons behind that decision, but he theorizes that it has something to do with avoiding copyright issues and how many players condemn the use of AI tools in games. Netease, however, has refuted these claims.
For Suda, if his game were created with the help of GenAI, the project would feel “fake” because there is always something “off” or “creepy” about AI-generated content, in his opinion.
Another case that defends this same protective stance is the recent quotes from Tim Bender, co-founder of Hooded Horse (the publisher of Manor Lords). Bender hasn’t pulled any punches, revealing that he has officially written prohibition clauses into contracts with his developers, forbidding the use of AI assets at any stage of development.
He also admitted he “f*cking hates gen AI art” because it has made his life more difficult, noting that AI assets often “infest sh*t in a way it shouldn’t” and can accidentally slip into final builds if not strictly banned from the start.
And last but definitely not least, even the biggest players in the industry are drawing a line in the sand. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently told GamesIndustry.biz that Generative AI has “zero part” in what Rockstar Games is building with Grand Theft Auto 6.
“Their worlds are handcrafted. That’s what differentiates them,” Zelnick guaranteed. “They’re built from the ground up, building by building, street by street… They’re not procedurally generated, and they shouldn’t be. That’s what makes great entertainment.”
While the industry remains heated over this topic, these recent moves suggest that the “AI gold rush” might be meeting a wall of human resistance. As developers prioritize heart and soul over automated prompts, it seems the next chapter of gaming history will still be written (and drawn) by human hands, but we’ll have to wait for the next chapters of this story.
