After a period of almost complete silence, Santa Monica Studio returned to the spotlight during the latest State of Play this Thursday, February 12th. And they didn’t just come back with a trailer; they brought a massive surprise that no one saw coming for God of War fans!
A New Perspective on the Spartan Legend
Out of pretty much nowhere, the studio announced God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new chapter in the franchise that introduces a perspective never before seen in the Spartan’s history: a 2D action-platformer.
The story is fully canonical and follows a much younger Kratos than we are used to, set before his legendary fury against the Greek (and Norse) gods. Its narrative takes place during his training in the Agoge alongside his brother, Deimos, and was penned by the same writing team responsible for God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök.
Oh, and my favorite part is a nostalgic twist, with TC Carson returning to the role of Kratos, serving as the narrator of the story!
The project was developed by Mega Cat Studios, an indie studio specializing in retro experiences, in partnership with Santa Monica Studio, a quite fascinating mix that resulted in incredible hand-drawn pixel art animation.
You can check out the announcement trailer below, which showcases frantic gameplay with Kratos wielding a spear and shield:
The most impressive part of it all is that God of War: Sons of Sparta is literally available right now!
The game has already appeared on the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 5 in two versions: the Standard Edition for $29.99 USD and the Digital Deluxe Edition for $39.99 USD. The Deluxe version includes several in-game items – such as Blue Orbs (the game’s currency), a belt attachment, and a special arrow – alongside extras like a digital artbook, a PlayStation Network avatar, and the digital soundtrack.
