In KPop Demon Hunters, the Saja Boys quickly gained a loyal fan following by offering free concerts filled with catchy music that appealed to every fanbase as well as popping up across all forms of media to grow their audience. They even demonstrated a public willingness to be seen as friends with competing pop group (and sworn enemies), Huntrix. But this was all a ruse… they had a secret agenda that was designed to literally steal the souls of all who chose to follow them. It all started out so small and innocent, but that’s the way that “idols” work. Idols don’t capture our hearts by force and demand our worship… they slowly entice us to give our hearts away, piece by piece, until they own us entirely.
The Bible repeatedly warns us against placing anything above our relationship with the Lord, and if we aren’t careful even seemingly innocent and harmless interests or activities can become an “idol” in our life. “Idols” don’t always come to us with clearly malicious intentions, and they will often appear to be content with sharing space alongside all our other priorities before making a move for the throne of our heart. Placing the Lord first in our lives doesn’t mean we can’t have other hobbies, but we must be mindful of what we choose to pursue and how high we place them… what our hearts chase, our souls follow.
Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. Jonah 2:8
Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment.” Matthew 22:37-38
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 1 John 2:15-16
