This month has been very exciting, both for new and veteran fighting game players, as we finally got a chance to try out 2XKO, which Riot Games has been working on for the last 9 plus years. Sadly, not everyone was fortunate enough to give it a try, as the playtest was invite-only.
Luckily, the game’s subreddit set up a referral megathread to help out the ones who didn’t get an invite. A week later, 2XKO released their Ranked mode, which had pros SonicFox and Cloud805 fight for the number 1 spot on the leaderboards.
Following a positive start, Riot has some big news about the game’s early access, how ranked seasons will work, and more.
2XKO Early Access Release Confirmed For October 7
The game’s official account recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) that 2XKO early access will hit PC on October 7. In the 3-minute video, they went through why they opted for a closed beta in the first place, early access details, community tournaments, and more.
Early access is a big milestone because it is the full release of the 2XKO. Most importantly, there will be no resets, so all of the characters we unlock, along with the skins, emotes, and more, will be permanent.
Another big news for new players is that early access will introduce Combo Trials. These can be quite situational and not always something that you can optimally use in a match. Trying them out is still fun and gives you a better feel of the character and how you can expect to play them.
The launch will mark the debut of the 2XKO battle pass, which will feature character skins, taunts, and more. As for Ranked, every year the game will have 5 seasons, and you can expect your rank to reset each season. A new character will also be released with each season, with the game’s 10th champion releasing when Early Access goes live.
Finally, the most important news for pro players, Riot will support the competitive scene by putting the “spotlight on community TOs and organizations”. As such, the studio will be sponsoring 22 community-run tournaments through the rest of 2025, which is being called the First Impact program.
Each First Impact program will receive a pot bonus from Riot and an extra prize for winning as a duo. This is to promote the game’s 2v2 feature, where you can fight in tag team matches with your friends.
The game is still in its early stages, so it will be very interesting to see how it changes with future updates. However, this game has a lot of Touches of Death, so hopefully Riot can do something about it before it limits its esports potential.
