Sony closed out its June State of Play showcase with the reveal of God of War: Laufey, a brand-new entry in the long-running action series that shifts the spotlight away from Kratos and onto his late wife, Faye, who is being played by actress Deborah Ann Woll.
The game was previously leaked ahead of the event, but Sony finally made it official with an extended gameplay demonstration lasting roughly twenty minutes.
While Kratos did pop up a few times, he isn’t the focus, which will be a hard pill for some fans to swallow. Instead, players take control of Faye, whose full name is Laufey, as she embarks on a new journey through a strange realm inhabited by gods, monsters and other mysterious beings. This new location is some sort of afterlife for the gods called the Everwhen, which explains the melting pot of mythologies and styles that we see, including Asian and Mayan/Aztec influences.
“The Everywhen is the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns, a transcendent realm above those we’ve come to know. A location in which gods and creatures from different mythologies come together, and not always in harmonious coexistence.”
The showcase opened with a flashback to the beginning of 2018’s God of War before transitioning into the new adventure. Faye quickly finds herself separated from her powers and forced to uncover the truth behind her situation while searching for a way home.
From a gameplay perspective, God of War: Laufey appears noticeably different from Kratos’ recent adventures. Faye is far more agile, capable of double jumps, rapid aerial movement and juggling enemies with lengthy combo strings. Combat looks faster and more stylish overall, with some sequences resembling character action games such as Devil May Cry more than the heavier, weightier combat of God of War and God of War Ragnarök.
The footage also showcased several magical abilities, including an attack that tears the soul from an enemy’s body and leaves it suspended in the air by a glowing tether. Faye can then follow up with additional attacks while enemies are vulnerable.
One of the more unusual additions is a talking companion named Phranque. Despite being a cube rather than an actual character, Phranque actively participates in combat, smashing into enemies and even helping extend combo chains. Faye can kick enemies toward him, allowing the pair to perform team-up attacks.
Did I mention Phranque is a gelatinous cube? He’s a gelatinous cube. Called Phranque. Pronounced Frank. Who can talk. It gets weirder, too, because there are talking ribbons called Rue attached to a strange sword. The trailer address the sword a few times, including one demon stating that it’s more than Faye realises.
The demonstration concluded with a large-scale boss battle against a towering demon-like creature, complete with cinematic set pieces and the sort of spectacle fans have come to expect from Santa Monica Studio.
No release date was announced.
God of War: Laufey was easily one of the biggest announcements of the evening and marks the first time the series has fully shifted its focus away from Kratos in a mainline-style adventure. There’s only one question remaining: are fans interested in a God of War game without Kratos?
