8 Fallout 4 Companions Who Feel Completely Different Once You Get to Know Them

There are many great things to say about Fallout 4. Not only does it present players with an outstanding rendition of a post-apocalyptic version of the Boston Commonwealth, but it also has interesting factions you can join, fearsome enemies you can fight, and an overall decent main story to progress through.

Fallout 4: 10 Most Memorable Side Quests

Fallout 4 isn’t just about helping settlements for the Minutemen, there are plenty of other things to do in the wasteland.

Another valuable aspect of the experience this title can provide are the various companions you can meet and ask to tag along with you as you explore the radioactive wasteland. And many of them have much deeper backstories than they initially reveal. Once you’ve spent enough time with them and exchanged a fair amount of words, you’ll be surprised by their past, and the tragedies they’ve endured.

Some spoilers ahead.

8 Piper Wright

A Tragic Loss to Cover Up a Conspiracy

When you first meet Piper, she seems like nothing more than a nosy reporter who wants to be in everyone’s business. After a while, you also get to meet her younger sister, Nat, who Piper fears takes too much after her. However, as time goes by, and you get to know Piper better, you’ll come to learn the tragedy of her upbringing.

Her father used to work with a man named Captain Mayburn, who often colluded with raiders to earn more money. Once that dirty secret was revealed, Mayburn murdered Piper and Nat’s father to cover up the truth and protect himself. Despite her interesting backstory, I wouldn’t say Piper is that strong when it comes to combat. So if you want her to tag along, I’d recommend looking into the strongest builds in Fallout 4 so you can deal with any threat yourself.

7 Deacon

The Past Always Catches Up

Personally, although the sense of camaraderie is very strong among the ranks of The Railroad, I wouldn’t go as far as to say that it’s one of my favorite major factions in Fallout 4. That title probably goes to The Institute, or The Brotherhood of Steel. In any case, one of the most prominent members of The Railroad is Deacon, a sarcastic and mysterious possible companion.

10 Most Powerful Enemies In Fallout 4

Fallout 4 throws several powerful enemies at the Sole Survivor, but these are clearly some of the strongest ones.

As you get to know him, he’ll tell you how he was a member of an anti-synth gang, which he eventually left to lead a better, less violent life. However, the past caught up to him, and it cost him the life of his beloved wife, Barbara. This tragic turn of events can almost make you forget how standoffish he can be.

6 Preston Garvey

The Quincy Massacre Still Weighs Heavy on Him

When you first meet Preston Garvey, he seems like a natural leader, who prioritizes the wellbeing of those under his care above everything else. I’ve always admired his selflessness and hard work ethics when it comes to building settlements and ensuring there’s peace and prosperity in the community. However, not everything is rose-colored.

Preston carries a very heavy emotional weight, which stems from the Quincy Massacre; an unfortunate event that was not all Preston’s fault, yet he feels survivor’s guilt every day for it. Perhaps if the Minutemen had had some of the strongest weapons in Fallout 4, the outcome could’ve been more favorable.

5 John Hancock

Banished By His Own Brother

Being a ghoul in the Boston Commonwealth is not easy. If you don’t believe me, ask John Hancock. You’d think that only feral ghouls would be ostracized from society and the settlements across the wasteland. But sadly, this is not the case, and sometimes, even family can betray you under the right circumstances.

Although John Hancock is the mayor of Goodneighbor, he was originally a resident of Diamond City, which remains under the administration of his brother, Mayor McDonough. He was forced to flee when his brother was elected and enacted a strict anti-ghoul decree. This goes to show that sometimes blood isn’t thicker than water.

4 Curie

A Very Interesting Transition

Curie’s storyline is fascinating, as it touches on deep topics, such as the desire to create and make significant breakthroughs for humanity, while recognizing that, even if machines lack the imperfections of humans, they can’t emulate the way our minds work. As you get to know Curie better, you’ll reach a point where she’ll ask you to transfer her consciousness to a living human body so she can use her intelligence as a machine and the human condition together.

I find Curie’s thirst for knowledge and curiosity for biology fascinating – Even if she’s not the companion I’d choose to maximize my odds of survival in the radioactive wasteland of Fallout 4.

3 Cait

Considering that Her Parents Were Monsters, She Turned Out Well

Of all the human companions available in the game, Cait is probably my favorite. She has this rugged yet neat appearance that conveys she can be a great option for romance, and also an outstanding brawling partner. Her thick Irish accent is also very interesting, and probably not what you’d expect in the middle of the Boston Commonwealth. At least not in a post-apocalyptic environment where nationalities and transatlantic journeys are probably not a thing anymore.

The more you get to know Cait, the more you’ll discover that her tough personality is nothing but a facade to hide the pain of her upbringing. She won’t admit to it from the get-go, but with time, she’ll tell you how she was sold into slavery by her abusive parents when she was 18 years old, which gives her character considerable depth. If you decide to romance her, there are some great Perks in Fallout 4 that can make wooing her much easier.

2 Paladin Danse

The Ultimate Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

As one of the Boston Commonwealth’s more strict and unyielding factions, The Brotherhood of Steel is cruel, to say the least. Not only do they operate under an extremist ideology and have nearly zero tolerance for free thinking, but they also likely possess the greatest inventory of Power Armor suits in existence. Despite this, Paladin Danse doesn’t seem to be a zealot and appears to be a little more open than most in the brotherhood once you get to know him.

Fallout 4: Every Companion, Ranked

Players looking for someone to watch their back in the Commonwealth need look no further; here are the best Companions in Fallout 4.

However, the way his character develops is, at least to me, one of the most surprising turn of events I’ve ever seen. During the Blind Betrayal quest in The Brotherhood of Steel’s main questline, you discover that Paladin Danse is actually a synth, which is something that probably blindsided more than one person, starting with Danse himself.

1 Nick Valentine

Tormented By Gruesome Pre-War Memories

Nick Valentine is arguably, one of the coolest companions in the game. Although he’s not as expressive as other companions due to his robotic nature, he remains a mysterious and interesting individual to traverse the wasteland with. Sadly, even the ultimate tech-detective can be tormented by pre-war events and an existential crisis.

And while he can often stay level-headed, the knowledge that every memory, every personality trait, and every thought he’s ever had or will ever have belongs to someone else weighs heavy on him.

There are some powerful weapons in Fallout 4, but the unique weapons are usually the most devastating. These are the top-tier unique weapons.
