Crystal Dynamics explains the use of AI during development of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

Like many games before it, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has not escaped the controversy surrounding generative AI. Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that the technology is being used in the development of this remake of the first game in the series.

Game Informer asked Jeff Adams, the experience director on Tomb Raider, for further clarification. He explains that for the studio, artificial intelligence is a tool that helps the team find the right answers more quickly.

“Let me give you an example of what that looks like. So, say in early level development, we have an idea for an object, but we’re not sure whether or not we want to take the dev time to build it. We can use a generative AI tool to help us visualise that object in the world.

If it works, we’ll then move it to our traditional pipeline. From there, the team will concept it, they’ll build it, and we’ll make sure that all the finished content in the final game is human-crafted. It’s really important for us that our team has the tools to make the highest quality experience possible.”

That being said, when Game Informer asked for extra details on how all this works in practice, a Crystal Dynamics representative stepped in to put an end to the conversation.
