The original Tormented Souls was known for its brutal puzzles, and the same can be said for the sequel. From the start of the game, players will be faced with challenging puzzles that will demand even the smartest players to put on their thinking caps.
One of the earlier puzzles is unlocking the Cryptex, a locked mechanism that is acquired from the hand of the frozen nun in the freezer. Players are tasked with changing dials to the correct order to unlock the Cryptex.
If you’re having trouble unlocking this mechanism, you have come to the right place. Here’s how to solve the Cryptex puzzle in Tormented Souls 2.
How to Solve the Cryptex Puzzle in Tormented Souls 2
After acquiring the Cryptex from the frozen nun in the freezer, you’re tasked with entering the correct code into it by turning a series of tiles. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, that depends.
The Cryptex code involves chess pieces, so if you aren’t familiar with chess, you’ll have an even tougher time solving this puzzle. However, there are hints in the Convent area that provide clues to the solution.
First, you should go and acquire the chessboard in the Calefactory room, north of the kitchen. The chessboard is located on a desk in the middle of the Calefactory room, as shown in the image below.
After acquiring the chessboard, choose the option to examine it and flip it over to find a series of symbols.
These symbols represent the directions that chess pieces can move on a chessboard. In other words, this is the solution to the Cryptex puzzle, without giving you an exact answer.
If you aren’t familiar with how chess pieces move on a chessboard, you can find out by visiting the library area of the Convent. On the top floor of the library, there is a booklet that explains how all chess pieces move.
Personally, I recommend just searching for the rules of chess online, rather than making the trek to the library. Even better, you could skip the research on chess and just discover the Cryptex solution in the next section.
Cryptex Puzzle Solution
With the chessboard in hand, we can officially solve the Cryptex puzzle. The objective is to match the chess symbols on the Cryptex to the symbols on the back of the chessboard (which represent the directions chess pieces can move).
The solution to the Cryptex is the following, from left to right: Knight, Rook, Bishop, Queen, King, Pawn, Knight. Use the image attached above for reference.
Once you turn all slots to the correct chess piece, the Cryptex will open and reveal a key. Use your cursor to grab the Crown Key, which will now allow you to progress further in the game.
How to Use the Crown Key
The Crown Key can be used on the locked door on the north side of the basement. This door can be found near the Crematorium, where you first meet the old man who wants you to find a book for him.
Use the image below to learn the exact location of the door that requires the Crown Key, indicated by a red arrow.
Using the Crown Key on this door will bring you to the prison, which is a small section that doesn’t have a map. Luckily, it’s such a tiny area that you don’t really need a map to understand where to go.
