Ubisoft’s latest entry in the 18-year-old Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has proven to be widely popular among gamers worldwide, with the 16th-century Sengoku period Japan title having been played by over five million gamers so far and being the best-selling 2025 game in Europe to date.
The multinational publisher plans on routinely updating Shadows for the near future, including the upcoming launch of the Claws of Awaji expansion this October, to keep players actively enthralled with the game until Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe debuts.
However, Ubisoft recently surprised fans when they announced that Ubisoft Bordeaux’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be getting a surprise update later this year, two years after Mirage’s original 2023 launch.
The Shocking Return to Assassin’s Creed Mirage
According to the X post, fans of the 9th-century Assassin Basim Ibn Ishaq will be able to return to Ishaq’s early life later this year with a brand-new story chapter and missions set in the ancient city of al-Ula, which is located in the Medina Province, Saudi Arabia today.
On top of this narrative expansion, the surprise update will additionally come with new gameplay improvements for Mirage’s base game and be available for free.
It’s currently unknown when the story chapter will take place, either after Mirage’s ending or sometime after Basim becomes an official Hidden One, or what events the update will entail.
Despite this current lack of information, it’s exciting to see Ubisoft give some love to an older, fan-favorite Assassin’s Creed game, especially following Basim’s notable absence in Shadows after he was suggested to play a larger modern-day role at the end of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
While no release date for this surprise update has been revealed yet, players could likely expect the update to debut in October to coincide with Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s two-year anniversary.
