Borderlands 4 Peaks Just Under 300,000 Concurrent Players

Gearbox Software’s latest entry in the Borderlands franchise, Borderlands 4, is by all accounts a return to form.

In our review, we said, “Borderlands 4 is undoubtedly my favorite Borderlands game to date. It is a culmination of everything that the franchise has learned thus far and then some.”

It’s been a wonderful step forward for the franchise after the disappointment that was Borderlands 3. We’re not the only ones to feel this way, either. Currently, the game has a “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic. 97% of critics are recommending the game, with an average score of 85. At first glance, that doesn’t seem too impressive compared to its predecessor, which has an average score of 81. There’s a catch there: it’s only recommended by 78% of critics.

With plenty of Borderlands 4 hype heading into the weekend, it turns out that the fanbase has been voting with their wallet and agreeing with our assessments: this is a pretty good game.

Over 288,000 People Were Playing Borderlands 4 On Steam This Weekend

As reported by SteamDB, the player count for Borderlands 4 broke 288,000 concurrent players on Saturday, September 13th. Given the fact that people are undoubtedly also playing on Xbox and PS5, the overall number is undoubtedly higher.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for everyone on PC, though. Some fans have been experiencing performance issues on PC. Thankfully, Gearbox has introduced some optimization options that can help alleviate these issues.

This was also a small critique our reviewer had on their PC, but clearly it didn’t deter them from enjoying the game.

While Borderlands 4’s return to form alone was enough to give the game a bump, it got some extra excitement when it appeared on the recurring Conan O’Brien segment Clueless Gamer. As you would expect, Conan had some thoughts on Claptrap.

You know what’s great about this little Claptrap guy? It’ll never get annoying… He’s my least favorite trash can I’ve ever met, and that’s really saying something.

Annoying or not, people are coming back for more Borderlands 4 action. Nintendo Switch 2 owners, your turn is coming up when the game releases on October 3rd.
