There’s no denying that Sony has a lucrative franchise in its hands with Astro Bot, after the platformer won hearts and a ton of awards last year, which came as a surprise to almost everyone.
With a game exploding as hard as Astro Bot, chances are high that Sony’s corporate overlords have lots of plans to generate revenue from the little white bot.
Fortunately, the game’s director has said that they won’t take any nonsense lying down when it comes to the creative decisions.
Astro Bot Devs Will Fight Back If Sony Interferes On Creative Side
The post-launch support of Astro Bot has been nothing short of amazing, as Team Asobi has dished out one free DLC after another. Sony didn’t pivot the game to be a live-service game or anything that didn’t fit the game’s creative direction.
Speaking of which, in a new interview with the Financial Times, Astro Bot Creative Director Nicolas Doucet stated that the studio aims to strike a balance between Team Asobi’s creative identity and aligning with Sony’s broader ambitions.
Doucet said, “If the creative side started feeling ostracised or penalised… between us we’d have that conversation…That would definitely come to a boil.”
This is very comforting to hear, as it shows that Team Asobi won’t let the Sony corporate overlords dictate everything if something is being added to the game that they disagree with creatively. This is particularly of interest if we get a sequel, which seems likely given what Sony’s president said last year.
To date, Sony has still not announced whether we’re getting a sequel to Astro Bot, or if more free DLC is on the way. I wouldn’t put it past Sony and Team Asobi to not only announce more free content is on the way, but even a sequel announcement is in the works.
Sony’s higher-ups have already said they see Astro Bot as an “emerging IP,” which plainly means we’ll see more of it in the future.
Let’s hope Sony’s corporate side doesn’t muck up whatever success and goodwill the game has garnered so far. The last thing we need is for the franchise to be turned into a live-service project.
