It’s increasingly uncommon for Japanese games not to make the jump to the rest of the world, but many have been lost over the decades, their only hope now being dedicated bilingual fans.
Some, like certain parts of the Trails series, eventually received official translations, while others will likely only ever be playable in English as fan translations.
Now, another game left behind by time has now managed to make it to the rest of the world thanks to a fan translation, the 2005 Japan-only PlayStation 2 game Cowboy Bebop: Tsuioku no Serenade, translated into English as Serenade of Reminiscence.
The Cowboy Bebop anime series needs no introduction, celebrated as one of the best sci-fi anime of all time, but its few video game adaptations are a little more obscure.
What Is Cowboy Bebop: Serenade Of Reminiscence?
Cowboy Bebop: Serenade of Reminiscence is a 3D action game released on August 25, 2005, for PS2.
It features Spike, Faye, and Jet as playable characters, each voiced by their original actors from the anime, while Ed and Ein provide backup and moral support, as the crew searches for a space pirate’s treasure.
It wasn’t particularly well received, despite the incredible potential of the series for video game adaptations.
Still, it includes the anime’s classic soundtrack by the venerable Yoko Kanno, even with a few new songs, and the cutscenes and story were generally seen as solid enough for the time.
That being said, games don’t always need to be good to garner dedicated fans, especially when they’re based on a series as universally beloved as Cowboy Bebop, and one who goes by SONICMAN69 took it upon themselves to handle the translation for Serenade of Reminiscence.
Obviously, it takes a massive amount of work to fully translate a game, especially when it’s all being done by a single person, so it’s incredibly impressive to see any completely amateur, fan-driven project like this make it to completion and release when so many get abandoned.
If you’re interested in trying it out, the patch is available on GitHub and can be used either on an emulator or on original hardware if you’ve got the game.
