Cozy games often rely on the tranquility of their environments for the appeal of the game as a whole, but there are many of these games that have an enthralling story with detailed quests and rewards that enhance your playing experience. If endless farming, gathering, or collecting gameplay doesn’t intrigue you, the tiers and scale of rewards you get from completing the quests will.
Skill trees, stories, and increased weapon or tool efficiency all add tremendously to the appeal of even the coziest, most well-rounded games. In most cozy games, there’s little to no need to progress the story, but it adds so much immersion when there is that need, however small.
Combining the upgrades and progress so many other genres of games focus on with the cozy game vibe that keeps you playing for hours without the game feeling too grind-heavy. These games are ranked based on how much intertwining story progression and coziness factor improves each game.
10 Sun Haven
Fighting Darkness One Minute, Farming Peacefully the Next
This game is one I got sucked into immediately, and it’s no surprise. There is so much content that it’s easy to start one quest, get ensnared by another, and have hours pass by in minutes. The main questline is so extensive and holds so many rewards that it takes a long time to reach the majority of those rewards.
Sun Haven is perfect if you tend to gravitate towards games that are equal parts relaxing and engaging. You can upgrade every tool you gain, your armor and weapons, and though the quests are necessary to progress through the game, you can still build up your skills to benefit the more casual parts of the game, like fishing and farming.
9 Cozy Grove
Those Ghosts Won’t Rescue Themselves
The time that passes in Cozy Grove is synced to real-world time, so when you’re playing, you can both notice the time going by and not notice it passing at all. Every day, you get to discover something new and help another ghost.
Whether you’re helping bring them peace or just there to listen, the spirits provide plenty of rewards that you can use to progress the game and improve your own home. The game doesn’t progress faster than your real day, but you can still spend hours questing and collecting upgrades for the island.
8 PowerWash Simulator
A Perfectionist’s Dream
This game’s story and advancements are intertwined, which means you get moments where you get to upgrade your power washer right before uncovering the ruins of an ancient culture. The Steam achievements in PowerWash Simulator are also based on how far you get in the game, so it’s no surprise it’s a more linear type of cozy game.
The upgrades you can buy are all relevant to the next levels you unlock, with each nozzle making the next level that much easier for you to complete. PowerWash Simulator is a repetitive game by nature, but the shop upgrades feed right into the lore behind the town you live in, making it far less cyclical than the game would be otherwise.
7 Palia
It Takes A Village
Everything in Palia, from your separate farm area to the town buildings, is beautifully designed and has such a welcoming, homey vibe to it. From the moment I played the beta version of this game, I was hooked on the story and on how relaxed playing it made me feel.
Palia has its fair share of quest and story progression, too, especially when you get to know each of the villagers as either a budding friendship or romance. Any quest you find will either upgrade something for your farm, your character, or the town, so any action you take will eventually come into contact with the story.
6 Spiritfarer
The Afterlife, But Make It Wholesome
When you think of cozy game, you don’t usually think about death, but Spiritfarer combines the two themes in a way that makes you feel warm inside, beyond just the cuteness of the characters you encounter. Caring for the spirits you encounter before they pass on is a lovely premise for a game, and it’s one of my favorites to play even if I’m just running around.
The atmosphere is one of the most charming parts of the game, but the requests and journeys each character brings with them all give you material rewards you can use to build your own base or make your ferry journeys run more smoothly.
5 Night in the Woods
Rich In Unlockable Content
This is a more story-based, linear game than most games in the cozy genre, yet you still unlock new areas and new characters to talk to the more the game progresses. If you’re playing Night in the Woods for the Steam achievements, there are so many secret stories and quests for you to discover that lie outside the base game’s story path.
All of these side characters and quests add to an already rich experience. Night in the Woods is one of my favorite comfort games, and it’s one I keep coming back to even when I discover new cozy games, despite it looking a little more unconventionally creepy than most cozy games.
4 Hello Kitty Island Adventure
Sanrio Nails It Again
This game is surprisingly a large commitment, but it doesn’t feel that way once you’ve been playing for a few hours. Hello Kitty Island Adventure is an adorably good time, whether you’re focused on building relationships with all your neighbors or on building up your own home on the island.
You don’t have to be familiar with the Sanrio characters to love this game, but if you do love Hello Kitty and her friends, or the chibi style in general, this is a perfect game to get into. It was already a game on my radar, so it’s no surprise it’s one of my personal favorites.
3 Animal Crossing: New Horizons
A Crisis Classic
This game and its entertaining quests and collections got me and everyone I know through the worst of times, and it’s not just the islanders and collections you can complete. The whole game has a nostalgic feeling to it, and even though it’s not the oldest cozy game to exist, it’s definitely one of the most popular.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is full of advancement and upgrades at every turn, even if you do fall into a little bit of debt to a certain raccoon along the way. If you can figure out your way around that, your experience is guaranteed to be a great one.
2 Stardew Valley
All About The Upgrades
The advancement in Stardew Valley is often hard-earned, which is what makes it feel so much more rewarding when you finally build that structure you need or get that last collection item with a very low forage chance. Whether you want to play the game as easily as possible, or add a little bit of difficulty to unlocking every area, the path of progression you want exists here.
I’m someone who will never stop singing Stardew Valley’s praises, especially when it comes to upgrades, because there are so many different skills, tools, and weapons that add to your farming experience instead of distracting you from it. It’s truly one of the most well-rounded cozy games out there.
1 Disney Dreamlight Valley
The Quests Are Part Of The Adventure
The story in Disney Dreamlight Valley is intertwined with the majority of progress you make, but the influence doesn’t take away from the magic of the game. Each of the characters has their own story arc that, if completed, provides you with either an upgrade to yourself or to the Valley.
The theme of community and the betterment of the entire Valley really works with the way you progress the game, since you can’t get very far without helping your neighbors out. There is still plenty of daily content and events that you don’t technically have to complete the story to participate in. Progression just unlocks more customizable or more powerful tools and areas of the Valley.
