One of the main quests in Hell Is Us is finding the Keystone of Ecstasy. The Keystone of Ecstasy is one of the four keystones that’s required to open the giant door in the Lymbic Forge, which leads to the final act in the game.
Investigations are not simple in Hell Is Us due to the game giving almost zero indicators of where to go or what to do. This can make progressing very challenging, leading to some frustrations along the way, and frequently getting lost in the big semi-open world.
Have no fear, this walkthrough is here to help. Read further to learn how to complete the Keystone of Ecstasy investigation in Hell Is Us.
Finding Abbot Jaffer
The first objective in the Keystone of Ecstasy Investigation is to find and speak to Abbot Jaffer at the Panthem Abbey in Acasa Marshes. Earlier in your playthrough, Panthem Abbey was blocked off, but after completing Lake Cynon, it becomes explorable.
Enter Panthem Abbey through the opening in the mountainside on the east side of the building and continue through it until you find Abbot Jaffer standing in the hallway.
Speak to him and exhaust his dialogue to unlock the National Library of Lethe.
The National Library of Lethe holds some crucial information on the whereabouts of the Keystone of Ecstasy, so return to your APC and select the option to fast-travel to its location.
The National Library of Lethe Walkthrough
While the National Library of Lethe has various items throughout that will help with Good Deeds, when it comes to the main investigation, the objective is to get inside the Book Restoration room. This room is found on the first floor and requires a keycode to unlock the door.
How to Find the Book Restoration Room Code
To find the combination to the Book Restoration room, go up to the third floor, where you’ll find a large hole in the ground in Computer Room D.
Drop down through this hole to find a room filled with books. Explore this room to find two books with long descriptions.
As you read the description of the books, you’ll notice that each has a series of numbers. These numbers give us a clue about what the Book Restoration door code is.
After investigating these books and putting them in chronological order, you will come to the conclusion that the code for the Book Restoration room is 537734.
Return to the Book Restoration room and open it to acquire the Twin-Headed Serpent and the Gospel of Teaar. The Twin-Headed Serpent is essential in accessing a secret location in Vyssa Hills as it opens a chest that contains the Token of the Serpent.
Vyssa Hills Walkthrough
Now that you’ve acquired the Twin-Headed Serpent item, you’ll be spending a good amount of time in Vyssa Hills as part of the Keystone of Ecstasy Investigation. This part consists of finding three tokens, which we explain in the following sections.
Finding the Token of the Serpent
When you reach Vyssa Hills, head north until you reach the mine entrance. The mine is located near the Timeloop on the lower level of the hillside.
Continue through this mine, where you’ll eventually find a large ladder leading upward. Climb the ladder to find a treasure chest with a slot that an item can go into.
Interact with the chest and select the option to use the Twin-headed Serpent token to unlock it. Inside, you will find the Token of the Serpent, which is another key item we need to progress this investigation.
The Token of the Serpent can be used to open the door that’s attached to the giant serpent’s body that goes through Vyssa Hills. It can be found on the west side of the map, near the Timeloop and mine entrance.
If you’re having trouble locating the door, start from the Serpent’s giant head and follow its body. Eventually, you will find the door in question.
Use the Token of the Serpent on the door to enter a whole new area of Vyssa Hills, getting us one step closer to acquiring the Keystone of Ecstasy.
Finding the Token of the Moon
When you enter the serpent’s body and reach the new area of Vyssa Hills, you’ll immediately encounter another door that requires a moon-shaped token.
To find this moon-shaped token, we need to enter the mine again. However, before you do that, grab the Mine Key located to the left of the locked gate, as we will need it to open a door underground.
Return to where your APC is parked and go northwest to find a ladder. Climb the ladder and take a right to find a pit with another ladder that you can climb down.
Progress through this area of the mine, using the Mine Key whenever you encounter a locked door. By following the small, white paintings of rats on the wall, you’ll eventually encounter a ladder that leads above ground.
Climb this ladder to end up back where the door is located that requires the Moon-shaped token, except this time, you’re inside the locked gate. Just a few feet away, you will find the “Token of the Moon.”
With the Token of the Moon in hand, return to the locked door from earlier and place the token into the slot to open it. Next, continue through the door and continue forward to reach another area of Vyssa Hills.
Finding the Token of the Palm
The last token we need to find is the Token of the Palm, which isn’t too far from the way you entered this area (through the moon door).
With a little exploration, you’ll find a large stone structure with a symbol of a palm and an opening in the center.
Go through the opening in the stone structure to find an enemy, and a lootable box on the ground. Loot the box to acquire the Token of the Palm, and then backtrack to where you came from.
To use the Token of the Palm, enter the nearby Serpent’s head and interact with the door inside. The Token of the Palm will open this door, leading to a small crypt.
Inside the crypt you will find the “Letter-Land Grant” usable item. After reading this document, a new area becomes available for you to travel to called Plains of Mist. Now it’s time to return to your APC and fast travel to the Plains of Mist region to continue the search for the Keystone of Ecstasy.
Plains of Mist Walkthrough
Plains of Mist is where you’ll find the Keystone of Ecstasy, but first you need to complete a handful of puzzles and close the Timeloop inside the dungeon. Before we get into the dungeon, we need to first open the main door.
How to Open the Door in Plains of Mist
In the starting area of Plains of Mist, you’ll encounter a large door that is a two-step puzzle. The first step is to interact with it and input the Twin-Headed Serpent, the item you received from the Book Restoration Room earlier in this investigation.
After placing the Twin-Headed Serpent into the door, a new puzzle will appear with a ton of symbols on it. The objective here is to turn the tiles so they display the correct order of symbols.
If you look closely, you’ll notice that each tile is shaped differently. These shapes will help us find the answer to this puzzle.
As you explore the Plains of Mist area, you’ll find symbols engraved onto the walls, each with a different shape. You need to match these symbols and shapes to the ones on the giant door in order to open it.
The solution to this puzzle is the following, from top to bottom:
- Pentagon: Sword
- Square: Diamond
- Circle: Sun
- Diamond: Eye
Once you solve this puzzle, the door will open, and you’ll officially be in the dungeon called Temple of the Fallen. This dungeon contains the Keystone of Ecstasy. However, you can’t grab it just yet as there are still a couple of challenging puzzles you’ll encounter on your journey there.
Temple of the Fallen Walkthrough
The main objective of the Temple of the Fallen dungeon is to reach the end and defeat the Ecstasy boss. Navigating through the Temple of the Fallen isn’t challenging due to a mostly linear structure, but the puzzles you’ll encounter are very challenging. We discuss how to solve them in the following sections.
How to Solve the Pit of Gods Puzzle
The first challenging puzzle in the Temple of the Fallen is the Pits of Gods puzzle. This puzzle involves standing on pressure plates in the correct order. If you stand on an incorrect pressure plate, you’ll fall into the depths below.
When you reach the large room with the pressure plates, there are inscriptions nearby that will give you clues about the solution, but for brevity’s sake, we have the answer for you listed below.
When facing the giant door, the solution to the Pit of Gods Puzzle is as follows:
- Moon and Star – Left Plate
- Tree – Left Plate
- Star – Right Plate
Keep in mind that it takes a second for the pressure plate to go down, so make sure to stand on them long enough. Once you complete the puzzle correctly, the door will open up, and you can continue exploring the Temple of the Fallen.
How to Solve the Pit of the Sacraments Puzzle
As you continue to explore the Temple of the Fallen, take note of the monoliths with symbols and inscriptions that can be examined. These contain clues for the solution to the upcoming puzzle, the Pit of the Sacraments.
The monoliths mention the order of the sacraments, which is the solution to the puzzle. For example, the monlith with the Hands and Hourglass symbol says “First Sacrament: Preparation for the sacred day of reckoning is our ultimate duty.”
After reading all the monoliths, you’ll discover the correct order of the symbols is: Hands and Hourglass, Dagger Eye, Backstab, and Twin-Head Snake.
Standing on the pressure plates in that order will open the large door, allowing you to continue through the temple and reach the Ecstasy boss.
How to Beat the Ecstasy Boss
The Ecstasy boss is much easier than the Terror boss. While you do have to watch your health, and dodge some projectiles, the fight against Ecstasy is mostly just a spectacle and doesn’t pose any real challenge.
The main goal here is to chase the Ecstasy boss around the arena, attacking it as much as possible, while avoiding projectiles that come from the red enemies.
Each time you land a hit on the Ecstasy boss, time speeds up and your character, the boss, and the projectiles move much faster. By the end of the fight, everything is moving at incredible speeds, but don’t worry, it still isn’t challenging.
Once you land the final hit on Ecstasy and defeat it in the boss fight, it will drop the Keystone of Ecstasy. Congratulations, you have officially completed this investigation.
How to Use the Keystone of Ecstasy
Just like the other keystones in Hell Is Us, you want to bring the Keystone of Ecstasy to the altar and giant door located in the Lymbic Forge dungeon of Lake Cynon. The Keystone of Ecstasy goes into the yellow slot.
Players need a total of four keystones to unlock the door, which include Grief, Terror, Rage, and Ecstasy. Finding these four keystones will lead to the final level in the game.
Keep in mind that you can hold onto the Keystone of Ecstasy until you find all the other keystones if you don’t want to make the trek to Lake Cynon.
