The Claws of Awaji DLC for Assassin’s Creed Shadows hosts a variety of powerful enemies Naoe and Yasuke must dispatch in order to free the island from oppressive Templar rule.
However, none are as intimidating and arguably lethal as Kimura Yukari’s masked, stealthy sharpshooter Nowaki, who appears several times throughout the Claws of Awaji DLC‘s main questline.
After being forced to hand over the Imperial Regalia Kusanagi no Tsurugi to Yukari, players have the choice to take down the three subordinate leaders of the Sanzoku Ippa, but Nowaki arguably has the most unique and difficult boss fight seen in all of Shadows.
This guide will go over Nowaki’s abilities and how to properly defeat her in the Turning the Tables questline, including where to face her for her final battle.
Turning the Tables on Nowaki
After completing the side quests Origin of a Killer, Hunting the Hunter, and Home of a Killer, Naoe will be led to the Sannomiya Shrine to confront Nowaki on her own terms while the savage sharpshooter is paying respects to her late Templar sister Suma.
The Sannomiya Shrine can be found a bit south of the Sannomiya Lookout viewpoint, and Naoe will have to wait at a rock near one of the Shrine’s structures in order to officially begin Nowaki’s boss fight.
After using Suma’s Templar pendant as bait, Naoe and Nowaki will confront each other but not enter direct combat yet as Nowaki will lead Naoe down a shadowy path to a forest arena slighly northeast from the Sannomiya Lookout viewpoint.
Along the way, Nowaki will taunt Naoe from the shadows, but players can track Nowaki from her voice indicated by a blue outline appearing on-screen when players are looking in the right direction of Nowaki’s location.
Nowaki’s Abilities, Decoys, and Traps
Before entering the arena, players have the option to refill their tools and rations and I highly recommend you do so as Nowaki’s Teppo is exceptionally powerful, often depleting three quarters of the health bar when shot at.
Plus, Nowaki’s Teppo causes temporary poison to afflict Naoe when shot, which ended up taking me down a couple of times in my attempts at defeating Nowaki.
Once inside the arena, Nowaki will fire at Naoe once. Before teleporting to a random part of the arena, she typically tends to be positioned higher against the walls of the arena in my experience.
Nowaki prepared for this fight and the arena is filled with decoys made to look like her and bell and explosive wire traps that will alert Nowaki of Naoe’s presence when tripped, causing Nowaki to fire at the player and teleport to another random location.
How to Locate and Defeat Nowaki
Throughout the battle, Nowaki will taunt Naoe, which will give away her location. However, this boss fight is a bit glitchy as of this writing and the first time I fought her, Nowaki was silent for the entire battle.
No matter if Nowaki is silent or not, players can still track her down by looking for blue outlines, waiting for Nowaki to notice you, or by slowly crawling near her decoys in Eagle Vision until one shows up red.
Once identified, Nowaki can be assassinated five times before being defeated, but be warned, if players attempt to assassinate any decoy, it will explode in a cloud of poison and cause Nowaki to change her position.
To avoid this from happening, I recommend slowly crawling throughout the arena, disarming tripwires and identifying each decoy so that locating Nowaki will be easier and less frustrating.
Naoe can only hit Nowaki from afar with kunai after assassinating her twice, otherwise Nowaki will dodge the blade and teleport to a new position.
After Nowaki is assassinated four times, she’ll teleport to the top of her central tower and inadvertently allow Naoe to climb up the tower where the two stealth experts can finally duel to death face to face.
Once defeated, players will acquire Nowaki’s Legendary Teppo called Little Helper for Yasuke to use, which will cause bullets to build up 35% poison affliction on enemies.
