I’m pretty sure there’s something in the water recently with these game commercials.
Following Sega’s callback to the “Genesis does what Nintendon’t” days commercial for Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, Battlefield 6‘s newest live-action trailer is doing the same.
Call of Duty’s marketing focus over the past few years has relied on celebrities and the culture surrounding Call of Duty, rather than highlighting the game itself. The list of starpower in Call of Duty, whether it’s been in the marketing trailers or the games themselves, is honestly pretty impressive. Kobe Bryant and Kimmy Kimmel famously appeared in the (admittedly iconic) Call of Duty: Black Ops commercial.
You can argue that things have jumped the shark since, though, with stars like John Malkovich, Ray Liotta, Ron Perlman, and others appearing in the actual game.
With the hype surrounding Battlefield 6, it seemed only fitting that the game pokes fun at its biggest competitor.
Battlefield 6’s Live Action Launch Trailer Pokes Fun At Call of Duty’s Overreliance On Celebrities
Right from the get-go, the new Battlefield 6 trailer looks a little too familiar.
Zac Efron, Jimmy Butler, Morgan Waller, and Paddy Pimblet appear as real-life versions of Battlefield 6 classes. “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” from The Smashing Pumpkins is playing in the background as Efron is about to start a speech before the squad is blown up, and someone asks, “Who was that?”
This isn’t the first time the Battlefield franchise has poked fun at another game’s trailer.
Following the success of Gears of War’s Mad World trailer, 2008’s Battlefield: Bad Company poked fun at its popularity. So yes, this shot across the aisle is 100% on brand for the Battlefield franchise.
Honestly, everything is done in good fun here. It’s just nice to see a lot of legitimate hype surrounding a Battlefield game. Let’s hope that the game can stick the landing.
Battlefield 6 will release on October 10th for PC, Xbox, and PS5.
