As soon as Ghost Story Games revealed the first trailer for Judas, I must confess that I got really excited due to its similarities to BioShock – one of my favorite franchises ever. I mean, a brand-new FPS with a melancholy setting, dark humor, and a plasmid-like power on the left hand? Count me in!
However, it seems that Ken Levine himself, the head of the studio and creative director for the game, kindly doesn’t want us to think like that.
Levine Calls Judas “Our Biggest Departure Since BioShock”
In a recent interview for the YouTube channel MrMattyPlays, the developer explained that he understands where comparisons between both IPs come from, but also warned that players need to expect some “really, really radically different” elements from BioShock (his words, not mine).
“There are parts of Judas that are more similar to BioShock, and there are parts of Judas that are really, really radically different,” said Levine. “I’m sure people notice there’s a gun in one hand, powers in the other hand. We have an additional hacking thing that we haven’t shown off that much. But the way the game works, the way the game is populated, and the way you choose between these relationships is something we’ve never ever done before. The way the world is decorated, the way encounters come in, the way you choose paths in the game, those are all so radically different. […] This is probably the biggest radical departure we’ve made since I did BioShock”.
Well, it certainly is a strong statement that may please or upset some players, depending on what each one is expecting. As for me, I’m actually excited to see how every narrative path of this story will unravel, since its premise is quite crazy: it takes place on a generational spaceship that is carrying the last survivors of humanity, and it is up to you to decide everyone’s fate by befriending or alienating them.
During the same interview, Levine also talked a bit about this “branching idea” for the main story, describing its engine as a “narrative Legos” – basically, in this concept, important narrative events will unravel differently (or even at another time and place) depending on every choice you make. That way, every player’s experience will be different, adapting to their decisions as they play.
Judas will launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but it still doesn’t have a release date.
