Square Enix is bringing back the best Final Fantasy spin-off franchise of all time. Unfortunately, it’s doing it in the worst way possible, in a way that’s bound to alienate long-time fans.
The Dissidia Final Fantasy spin-off series consists of fighting games using Final Fantasy characters. The first two were incredible titles, with sprawling multiverse-spanning storylines that brought the heroes and villains of the franchise together for the first time. The third game, Dissidia NT, completely missed the point, focusing on team-based multiplayer, and killed the franchise.
It seems that Square Enix isn’t done with the Dissidia games just yet, as a trailer for a new entry has been put on the official Final Fantasy YouTube channel, with a proper reveal planned for October 14. Unfortunately, the thumbnail has revealed some information that will turn people away.
The New Dissidia Final Fantasy Is A Mobile Multiplayer Game
According to the trailer thumbnail and the game’s official website, the new Dissidia is a Team Boss Battle Arena game for iOS and Android devices. The website also has numerous pictures of the real world, rather than those from Final Fantasy.
The real world images suggest that this could be Square Enix’s attempt at making a Final Fantasy game in the same vein as Pokemon Go, where players meet up in real life to fight raid bosses. Considering how Pokemon Go’s rivals have went out of business one by one, it doesn’t spell good things for Dissidia.
The most frustrating aspect of this announcement is bringing back the Dissidia name for something that isn’t a fighting game. The reason people loved the original and its sequel was for their amazing 1v1 gameplay and their story, which is something the later entries keep ignoring. The Dissidia fans have got their desire, as a new game is on the way, but it seems it will be a case of being careful what you wish for.
