When you mention Steven Spielberg’s name, most people will know him as the award-winning director of many classic films, including Jaws, Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, and Saving Private Ryan—but he’s also a pioneer in the video game world.
After winning a plethora of awards for his work on the WW2 epic, Saving Private Ryan, Spielberg began looking for other ways to depict wars fought throughout history. After seeing his son’s love of GoldenEye 007, he set his sights on video games.
The Call of Duty vs. Battlefield Rivalry Is Alive And Well
In 1995, Spielberg co-founded Dreamworks Interactive, a game development studio where arguably the most influential FPS series was born—Medal of Honor.
While the original MOH game didn’t make a huge splash, Spielberg would soon receive a pitch for its sequel, Allied Assault. The pitch was delivered by none other than Vince Zampella, an industry veteran who has since worked on many renowned games, including Titanfall, Apex Legends, Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, Call of Duty, and Battlefield 6.
With the gaming expertise of Zampella to help guide Spielberg’s genius on a new platform, Allied Assault was a massive hit. In an interview with GQ, Zampella praised Spielberg for being fully involved in the process.

After disagreements with EA, the publisher of Medal of Honor, Zampella went on to start Infinity Ward and create the FPS powerhouse, Call of Duty. “The only reason that Call of Duty exists is because EA were d*cks,” said Zampella.
After helping build the sturdy foundation the Call of Duty franchise rests upon, Zampella later returned to EA to join the Battlefield team, which soon became COD’s biggest competitor.
With Battlefield 6 off to an outstanding start with over 740,000 concurrent players and very positive reviews, it’s evident the rivalry between the FPS genres’ two biggest names is alive and well.
Battlefield 6 is out now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
