Paramount and Activision have found the creative team for their upcoming Call of Duty movie. Peter Berg and Taylor Sheridan are writing and producing the film, while Berg will sit in the director’s chair.
This won’t be the first time Berg and Sheridan have collaborated. They previously worked on the Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water and Wind River.
No plot or character details have been announced yet, though the filmmakers won’t be lacking for inspiration. The Call of Duty franchise has seen dozens of releases across the years, and its Modern Warfare and Black Ops series seem ripe for an adaptation.
The Call of Duty movie was first announced in September, with Paramount’s new chairman and CEO David Ellison saying the studio is approaching the Call of Duty movie “with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve.”
Berg and Sheridan taking the reins to ensure it meets those standards seems like a natural choice. Berg directed the war film Lone Survivor and several more action movies, while Sheridan wrote Sicario and its sequel. He’s perhaps best known for the TV series he’s developed for Paramount, like Yellowstone, Tulsa King, and Landman. Sheridan’s TV deal with Paramount runs through 2028, and his new deal with NBCUniversal will pick up at the start of 2029.
Their Call of Duty film won’t be the first attempt to bring the FPS franchise to theaters. Activision formed Activision Blizzard Studios in 2015 to adapt its IP, including a Call of Duty project from Sicario: Day of the Soledad director Stefano Sollima that never manifested.
