The Sailing skill is finally available in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), so it’s time to start training to level it up!
As always with RuneScape, trying to level up a skill efficiently is important. You want to take the least time possible to get all of the unlocks and benefits, after all!
In this guide, we’ll help you with the initial Sailing training up to level 50.
Sailing Training Guide | Old School RuneScape
Levels 1 to 15
To start, you’ll need to unlock the Sailing skill by doing the “Pandemonium” quest. You can start it by talking to Will or Anne at Port Sarim. This quest acts as a pretty thorough tutorial of Sailing, so we recommend paying attention to it.
This quest will also introduce you to the first type of Port Tasks: Courier Tasks. These tasks will be your main source of XP until you reach Level 15, so do them often.
Aside from that, the other main source of XP in the early levels is Charting. You’ll find spots you can interact with as you sail. Interacting with them will chart them, giving you some XP.
You’ll also get an extra boost of XP if you chart all spots within a zone. However, you only have access to Generic Charting (via Captain’s Log) and Spyglass Charting (via Spyglass) at the start.
Once you get to Level 12 you’ll unlock the “Prying Times” quest. Completing it will allow you to chart forgotten drinks, which will give you a nice boost of XP.
However, do not drink these potions if you aren’t prepared. Their random effects can kill or teleport you, making you lose your boat. You can recover your lost boat by talking to a Shipwright at any dock and paying a small Gold fee.
Lastly, make sure to pay attention to when your sails catch a gust of wind. A message will appear in your chat when it happens. Clicking on the sails will give you a slight XP bonus, which definitely comes in handy early.
Levels 15 to 30
As soon as you reach Level 15, you want to visit a Shipwright. They can be found at any dock, and they can help you build or customize your ship.
For now, though, you mainly just want to buy a Skiff to ditch your old Raft. Then, customize your boat to fit in a Salvaging Hook.
You can use this hook to grab loot from salvageable shipwrecks out at sea. This is slower than Port Tasks for leveling, but it’s also very passive, so you can use it for some AFK leveling here and there.
So, at this point, you mainly just want to keep doing Port Tasks while doing some Salvaging on the side for low effort leveling.
Complete all Sailing-related quests you get as you do this, such as “Current Affairs” at Level 22. This quest in particular unlocks new Charting options and also gives some XP upon completion.
Levels 30 to 50+
Once you reach Level 30, you’ll get two new great ways to earn XP. The first of these is an expansion to Port Tasks, the Bounty Tasks.
Unlike the Courier Tasks you’ve had until now, these Bounty Tasks will have you hunting down sea creatures to engage in naval combat. They give decent XP, and can break up the monotony of the grind!
The second new leveling option is the Barracuda Trials, starting with The Tempor Tantrum. This is a time trial mode where you have to follow a route, collecting crates and delivering items.
There are multiple ranks to each Barracuda Trial, with higher ranks unlocking as you clear the time limits on the lower ones. The higher the rank, the more demanding it is, but also the more XP you get!
More Barracuda Trials will unlock at Level 55 and Level 72. Those are harder and take longer, but they also give more XP per completion.
Once you reach Level 45, you’ll unlock the “Troubled Tortugans” quest. This is a fairly easy quest and we recommend doing it as soon as possible. It gives you a whopping 10,000 XP upon completion.
From this point on, your best bet for leveling is to focus on Barracuda Trials and Bounty Tasks. Of course, it’s a good idea to do some Salvaging as well, if you want to take a break with a more idle activity.
Nonetheless, that’s the end of our Sailing training guide for OSRS! We hope this helps you reach Level 50 and beyond as quickly as possible.
