Tencent is a Chinese technology and entertainment company that dabbles in everything from gaming, to social media, and cloud services, and they’ve just globally launched an open-source text-to-3D engine powered by advanced AI.

Hunyuan3D 2.0 will not only allow users to create high-resolution assets using text, they can also upload images, and even sketches to create 3D models that can be used for game development, advertising, media content, e-commerce, and special effects for filming.
Tencent Aims To Empower Creators With Global Release Of Hunyuan 3D
According to Tencent’s press release, Hunyuan 3D “cuts production time from days or weeks to just minutes” and has already received worldwide acclaim prior to today’s global release.
The press release reads, “Since the release of several open-sourced 3D models in November 2024, it has surpassed 3 million community downloads on Hugging Face, earning recognition as one of the world’s most popular 3D open-source models among developers, creators and the open-sourced community globally.”
Hunyuan 3D allows users to:
- Create photorealistic 3D models using advanced text-to-3D generation technology
- Generate a wide range of 3D assets, including objects, characters, and environments
- Use images or sketches to create 3D models
- Experience rapid model generation with optimized performance
Hunyuan 3D 2.0 breaks down the generation process into two parts: shape and texture. The mesh, or shape, of your creation is made using Hunyuan3D-DiT, a sophisticated large-scale shape generation model, while the texture is generated by Hunyuan3D-Paint, a large-scale texture synthesis model.
In addition to being able to generate commercial-grade 3D assets, users will also be able to animate and modify their creations.
Tencent says the program “supports output in mainstream 3D formats such as OBJ and GLB, and can be seamlessly integrated into professional software like Unity, Unreal Engine, and Blender.”
While Tencent‘s new engine may be a great way for content creators and game developers to cut their production times in half, the use of AI remains a heated debate within the dev community and gaming as a whole.
As artificial intelligence continues to advance and encroach on every facet of life, many video game companies are restructuring, laying off employees, closing studios, and positioning themselves to utilize AI for optimal efficiency and profit.
