The fifteenth best-selling manga of all time, with over 120 million copies in circulation, was pretty hard to read for a Western fan. Kingdom by Yasuhisa Hara is a colossal war epic with almost 900 chapters, and it’s only becoming available in English now. Viz Media secured the rights in February 2025, with the first volume arriving in November of this year, but the great news is that now the chapters of Kingdom will also be available digitally on the Shonen Jump app.
Kingdom is a fictional recounting of the unification of China in the third century B.C. by the state of Qin, led by king Zheng, who later became the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. The protagonist is Shin (Chinese name Li Xing), based on the historical figure of the same name, an orphaned boy who grows to become one of the great generals of Qin. The series is famous for its lengthy depictions of large-scale battles, where Hara’s artistic prowess shines.
Published in Weekly Young Jump (Shueisha’s seinen magazine), the series has been running since 2006 and somehow never got an English localization. An anime television series by Pierrot launched in 2012. The first season was controversial for its 3D CGI models that many found off-putting. The following seasons markedly improved the animation, but many believe that the franchise never recovered from the damage done by the first season. Still, the Kingdom manga keeps going strong, and the anime is currently airing its sixth season in Nov. 2025.
Despite the global success of manga, some massive series remain untranslated in the West. Kingdom was, perhaps, the most prominent example, as the longevity and success of the franchise could make it contend with powerhouses like One Piece. The story is exciting, the characters are compelling, and the action and battles are almost unrivaled. Add to it an artist who can depict hundreds of men on a chaotic battlefield without skimping on the small details, and you’ll get the appeal of this manga.
The first eight chapters of Kingdom are available on the Shonen Jump app. It’s still unclear at what rate the other chapters will be released, or if the manga will also land on Manga Plus.
