By bringing solid new leagues along with improvements to multiple segments of the game, developer Grinding Gear Games has continuously shown it is serious about making Path of Exile 2 as good as it can be. The game’s newest update, The Last of the Druids is another strong push toward this goal, as it introduces the most badass Druid in the action RPG scene.
Slated to arrive on Dec. 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC, The Last of the Druids is the fourth major update and adds the game’s eighth class. While the Druid archetype has been explored by many other RPGs (who doesn’t remember Halsin’s bear-form sex scene in Baldur’s Gate 3?), in the ARPG genre Druids tend to be quite basic. In Diablo 4 and Diablo Immortal, we have the typical spellcaster human who can turn into a wolf and a bear. Last Epoch spiced things up with the insectoid form Swarmblade. None of these reach the level of coolness of the PoE2‘s Druid, who can turn into a dragon.
When playing the Druid, you will have access to the class’s traditional forms. In a human form, it can cast spells linked to forces of nature. It can invoke a volcano to spill balls of fire, burning any foe who dares to get near. It might also summon a storm to cover a large area of the map with heavy rain and lightning strikes. If these destructive powers were not enough, the human Druid can also make vines sprout from the ground to trap enemies.
Despite the potential of the human Druid, the three animal forms are the true stars of the show. By using Animal Talismans, a new weapon type coming to patch 0.4, the Druid can turn into three different beasts. The bear is slow but sturdy, able to trample enemies and has great synergy with the volcanoes. Its counterpart is the fast-paced wolf, with skills capable of freezing enemies and ferociously slashing them. And the third is the wyvern, a dragon-like form that can cast spells and even burn enemies by breathing fire from the skies.
Path of Exile 2’s new class has a remarkable level of complexity: the human–form spells have strong interactions with the animal-form skills. During a media Q&A session earlier this week, game director Jonathan Rogers called attention to the fact that their Druid is a found-in-one class. He explained that “we tried to make sure each of the three forms had something the other forms could use,” exponentially increasing the number of possible builds.
The human-turning-into-dragon Druid is an important element of this next update, but not the only one. The new league, Fate of the Vaal, will introduce a new gameplay loop based on putting together a map to reach the room where Atziri, Queen of the Vaal, awaits. The rooms have unique functions and enemies waiting for you, which makes sense considering that the new league was inspired by the 2021 indie Loop Hero, a game where you can change the map by using landscape cards.
The Last of the Druids is also bringing broader updates and upgrades to existing systems. Besides balancing skills with various buffs and nerfs, GGG is adding 200 new nodes to the passive skill tree. With these additions and changes, the Path of Exile 2 team is creating a strong foundation for the 1.0 version of the game, which Rogers is still confident will be ready for a 2026 release.
