Bungie's Marathon gets new release date in video deep dive

Bungie’s long-awaited reboot of the Marathon franchise arrives sometime in March 2026, the developer announced Monday as part of a new deep dive video on the sci-fi extraction shooter. Marathon was previously slated for release by March 31, 2026, after being delayed from its September launch date, and it appears Bungie will be using all the time afforded to it to ensure that its follow-up to Destiny 2 launches in good shape.

In a nearly 23-minute video detailing Bungie’s changes to Marathon in recent months, the developer confirms the features that it’s been promising, including proximity chat, solo queue, and an updated UI. The latest footage also offers a peek at the game’s new look and atmosphere, which Bungie says is has more of the grounded feel, grit, darkness, and mood required for an extraction shooter to feel dangerous. The game certainly looks different compared to the alpha playtest of Marathon, which saw mixed reception and resulted in Bungie and owner Sony Interactive Entertainment pushing the game’s release date back. (Controversy over plagiarized artwork also contributed to that…)

There’s a lot to chew on in the latest video from Marathon, which walks potential players through just about everything, from gameplay to maps to loot. Perhaps most enticing is a look at the Cryo Archive, the first deck on the UESC Marathon ship, which will host some of the most hardcore survival action in Marathon.

Marathon is coming to PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X when it launches in March 2026. Bungie promises full cross-play and cross-save support, and additional details on Marathon coming in January.

For now, check out some new screenshots of Marathon in the gallery below for a closer look at the game’s visual changes.
