Bristol-based indie developer Friday Sundae has released a Steam demo for There Are No Ghosts at the Grand, their genre-blending adventure combining renovation sim, comedy horror, and musical mystery. Following its breakout Xbox Showcase appearance in June, players can now experience this unique mashup firsthand before the full 2026 launch on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and day-one Xbox Game Pass.

Daytime Renovation, Nighttime Combat

Players inherit a crumbling English hotel, restoring it during daylight hours whilst battling ghosts after dark. This dual-phase structure creates contrasting gameplay loops where satisfying renovation progress transforms into supernatural survival once night falls.

Companions include a sardonic cat and talking power tools that convert into ghost-fighting weapons when darkness arrives. The vacuum tackles vengeful spirits, paint sprayers expose invisible assailants, and the furniture cannon subdues slithering spooks with well-aimed bookcases.

Musical Character Storytelling

Each mysterious character features their own story and song spanning genres from spooky ska to wartime jazz to skater punk. This musical variety creates distinctive identity for individual characters whilst establishing atmosphere through genre-appropriate soundscapes.

The narrative framework weaves supernatural plotting through character interactions, with Lovecraftian mysteries emerging as players explore, renovate, and restore. A creeping horror intensifies with each passing day, building tension beneath the comedic surface elements.

Genre Mashup Ambitions

There Are No Ghosts at the Grand deliberately combines typically incompatible genres—renovation simulation, comedy, horror, mystery, and musical theatre—into cohesive experience. This ambitious blending risks tonal inconsistency but potentially creates something genuinely distinctive within crowded indie horror markets.

The demo provides hands-on evaluation of whether these disparate elements cohere meaningfully or clash awkwardly, allowing players to assess the concept before full release commitment.

The full game launches 2026 with additional platform announcements forthcoming.
