French President, Emmanuel Macron, recently made the news for reasons other than his collapsing government. After Sandfall Interactive won the 2025 Game of the Year Award for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, President Macron was quick to congratulate the French game developers on their recent success. The move was unexpected, not only because it is not often that leaders of nations keep track of gaming news, but also given the political mess that Macron has found himself in over the past two years.
Yet this was not the only surprise of the night, Sandfall Interactives success was also unexpected. Since their formation in 2020, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the only game that the studio has ever developed, and they certainly set the bar high. Incredibly, the title won of the 13 awards that they were nominated for. In light of the studios unprecedented success, President Macron took to Instagram to lavish praise on Sandfall Interactive, describing their game as a “historic first for a French title”, “a great pride for Montpellier and for France” and “a shining example of French audacity and creativity”.
Though many agree in France with his remarks, not all are convinced. President Macron has been a vocal critic of the video games industry in the past, deploring games depicting violence as inciting violence within French society and the wider world back in 2023 in response to riots in Paris. He did later backtrack on his remark, claiming that he respected the general industry, but it seems that some have not forgotten.
While this success will live long in the memory of those involved with Sandfall Interactive, their award season was mired in a controversy that will leave a sour taste in the mouths of the developers. Japanese themed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 tasted success not only at the Game of the Year Awards, but at a number of other award ceremonies too, including the Game of the Year and Debut Game awards at the 2025 Indie Game Awards. Unfortunately for the team, both awards were revoked shortly after the announcement due to claims that graphical textures were made with generative artificial intelligence (GAI). It turns out that this was true, however it was a mistake that they were published. They were patched out just five days after the games release, as they were only intended to be used as temporary place holders, however the terms of the competition still required the awards to be retracted.
