Yasumi Matsuno Was Surprised By Final Fantasy Tactics Exceeding Sales Expectations

Despite being nearly 30 years old, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is doing exceptionally well sales-wise.

In just under 100 days, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles sold one million copies, which is impressive. Square Enix’s pivot to multi-console launches seems to be paying off, rather than the console-exclusive launches used for games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

In June 2025, series director Yasumi Matsuno posted on Twitter about the potential sales figures for a game that’s been around for three decades.

Remasters and remakes generally do not exceed the sales figures of the original version in principle (the original version sold about 2.5 million copies worldwide). The sales of the remake version “War of the Lions (PSP version)” are around 1.1 million copies worldwide. However, for the North American and Japanese markets, it’s estimated that 60-70% of buyers had played the original version,” said Matsuno.

He then said that, taking the above into account, The Ivalice Chronicles hitting multiple platforms and languages means that his prediction is that the game will sell around “800,000 to 1 million copies over about 3 years from release.” His reasoning is that games now tend to sell steadily, whereas in the past they didn’t.

On the weekend, Square Enix confirmed the latest sales milestone for Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles. Matsuno says he underestimated the sales figures by too much and laughed about it.

In our review, we said, “Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is remarkable in every respect. From its inherently timely story to its standout characters and reworked script, this is a special game. There’s a reason Ivalice is highly regarded as one of the best worlds Square Enix has brought to life, and it begins with a fight to restore balance to a world ripe with class warfare and oppression. Human history shows that we often fail to learn from our mistakes, and that messages from the past ring true as we witness the very struggles Ramza fights for unfold once again. Make no mistake, Final Fantasy Tactics might be the best game Square Enix has ever put out.”
