Bandai Namco has just blessed us all with a nearly 10-minute meaty overview of the lore and combat from the upcoming anime Soulslike Code Vein 2.
We start off with a fittingly complex anime introduction to The Resurgence — a catastrophic failure that brought Humanity to its knees and gave rise to the mysterious immortal heroes known as Revenants.
Like all good heroes, they fought the darkness and won, but the darkness wasn’t done and returned. Hence, the need for a sacrifice in order to maintain peace. With that sacrifice slowly fading as well, the Resurgence has begun anew.
Survival of your unique Revenant will take mastering all of the newly expanded combat abilities this humble RPG follow-up has. Which we are finally beginning to see in action!
Drain Attacks tap into the vein of the vampire-like tendencies on offer here — providing deep offensive maneuvers used to extract Ichor, which is an essential resource used in the player’s most powerful abilities, known as Formae.
Formae can take on the form of specific Weapon Formae that modify attacks and grant buffs. They can also be Bequeathed Formae that summon unique weapons for devastating strikes, and Defensive Formae that offer critical blocks, counters, and evasive maneuvers. This seemingly means that Formae is a holy trinity of power that you can meld to suit your own playstyle.
Today’s trailer has also given us our best look at Jails — buffing items worn is a special chamber on the Revenant Hunter’s back that shapes combat by altering stats, modifying Drain Attacks, and providing tactical advantages based on the encounter at hand.
For those of us who like to get a little reckless, we’re being introduced to Restorative Offering — a partner mechanic where they can restore the fallen Revenant Hunter with recovered health, though a cooldown leaves them temporarily incapacitated and unable to assist in battle.
New to CODE VEIN II are weapon classes Twin Blades and Rune Blades, joining fan favourites such as the Bayonet, Halberd, Hammer, and Greatsword. The expanded Blood Code system, which allows players to shape their combat style by unlocking and swapping between different Revenant power sets as they progress. Boosters allow players to unlock new key attributes and activate traits tied to Blood Codes and equipment, enabling players to create specialized playstyles.
Finally, players will soon be able to try this all for themselves, as Code Vein 2‘s Character Creator Demo starts on January 23, 2026. Offering 64 save slots that transfer directly into the final game, the Character Creator Demo allows players to experience the game’s deep customization system for the game’s protagonist Revenant Hunter, where players can customize their characters to great detail with a vast array of settings for body type, hairstyle, facial expressions, accessories, makeup and more. Players can also visit the hot spring at the MagMell Institute to view their character in different lighting environments and use Photo Mode to capture and save their creations.
Code Vein 2 launches for Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC on January 30, 2026.
