Death Cab for Cutie announce new album 'I Built You A Tower'

Indie rock band Death Cab For Cutie will unveil their 11th studio album this spring.

Revealed today, I Built You A Tower will see a June 5 release via ANTI-Records. This marks the end of the band’s 20-year stint with Atlantic Records and sees them returning to their indie roots. The 11-track album was produced by John Congleton, who worked on the band’s 2022 studio album Asphalt Meadows. A new single from the record titled “Riptides” comes with a Jason Lester-directed music video, which can be seen here. Pre-orders for the new album can be made here.

Vocalist Benjamin Gibbard said this about the new song:

“’Riptides’ is about the challenge of dealing with personal struggles as the world around us experiences tragedy and loss on an unfathomable scale. And how when these two elements intertwine themselves in our psyches, it feels utterly paralyzing.”

Guitarist Dave Depper said this about the new album:

“The anniversary tours exorcised any nostalgia in our systems. We felt part of this powerful force greater than all of us and went into the studio with a sense of, how can we capture that feeling and put it into something new?”

Bassist Nicholas Harmer also said:

“The whole experience of this record got us back to the earliest versions of this band: If the musicians in the room like what we’re working on, that’s enough. We reconnected with the confidence that comes with that.”

Alongside the new album announcement, Death Cab For Cutie also revealed a headlining tour across Europe and the U.K. this fall. Tickets for these shows will go on sale to the general public this Fridau (March 20) at 10 a.m. local time.
