10 Red Dead Redemption 2 Systems that Could Make GTA 6 Rockstar's Finest Masterpiece

Being arguably the most anticipated game in history, Grand Theft Auto 6 has the potential to translate that hype into the most awarded release ever published in the annals of the interactive medium.

8 Red Dead Redemption 2 Scenes Players Didn’t Fully Appreciate Until a Second Playthrough

These scenes were even more impactful the second time around.

Rockstar has been a guarantor of exceptional adventures that have defined their respective genres and generations, and its new creation seems poised to revolutionize everything we know about open-world titles.

However, to be able to say it will succeed, it must at least surpass Red Dead Redemption 2, the developer’s current magnum opus and the main reference point the studio will use to create a superior game.

Therefore, in order to establish a connection between the two games that allows us to predict how their next project will benefit from this relation, I invite you to read this list of ten Red Dead Redemption 2 systems that could transform GTA 6.

10 Dynamic Animations

Feeling the Weight of Actions

One of the fundamental reasons Red Dead Redemption 2 feels such a captivating adventure is the meticulous detail Rockstar poured into every action, translated through animations.

Looting a corpse, opening a door, punching an enemy, shooting a bottle… From the most mundane to the most spectacular activity, everything has its own animation that lends the game unparalleled realism.

In contrast, the other series’ last installment was a rather basic iteration of these descriptions, with many mechanics lacking special animations, making everything feel generic in comparison and significantly diminishing the game’s impact if they were to reappear.

Obviously, Grand Theft Auto 6 will offer far more options than Red Dead Redemption 2, and therefore, it’s difficult to imagine it having the same level of detail, but at least striving for it is the path to creating a more compelling and immersive experience.

9 Character Evolution

Crime Doesn’t Go Unnoticed

Although it might seem minor to many, perhaps even unnoticed, Arthur Morgan’s physique changes considerably over time, making him look much more human.

In GTA, the usual practice is to artificially alter the character’s appearance through archaic shops that detract from the immersion of the experience, instead of doing so in a much more gradual and natural way.

Having to shave, only being able to get certain haircuts depending on hair volume, developing dark circles under the eyes if you don’t get enough sleep, and other variables that accurately reflect the characters’ biological condition would be a powerful incentive to make them feel more alive.

It wouldn’t have a major impact on gameplay, though it would significantly affect the impression it makes on players, leading them to subsequent changes in behavior and understanding of the game.

8 Eagle Eye

Emphasis on Exploration

While there are always interesting things to do in the Grand Theft Auto universe, Red Dead Redemption 2 highlighted the minimal substance of these activities.

Therefore, assuming GTA 6 integrates a much greater range of complexities than just killing and driving, the Eagle Eye mechanic would seem indispensable for finding points of interest in so many environments.

If we were to interact with more elements of the scenery, an effective way to distinguish them from the truly inert aspects would be practically essential; otherwise, a lot of time and the natural flow of exploration would be lost.

Certainly, Grand Theft Auto has always been a series of generalities rather than specifics, which speaks to the nature of its content, though this would be a very welcome change of pace for the formula.

7 Hunger and Weight

Taking Care of Yourself is Necessary

In conjunction with the character progression system, I genuinely think it’s time for GTA to move away from its arcade style and embrace a more immersive experience, which could be achieved through food.

10 Red Dead Redemption 2 Moments That Prove Slower Games Are More Powerful

You don’t always have to rush, especially when you’re fully immersed in a game’s world.

Forcing us to enter restaurants, eat at home, or hunt for our sustenance, directly affecting our characters’ physical condition, could create a deeper connection to the experience than just the action-based facet.

The game can be much more than an antisocial simulator, and it wouldn’t be necessary to make hunger and weight mechanics extremely complex, as even a superficial inclusion could be a significant step forward for the IP to break its own boundaries.

It might be annoying for those who just want to shoot everything that moves, but if you want a truly engaging adventure, this is undoubtedly one of the systems to implement.

6 Inventory Managing

No More Endless Armaments

GTA and realism don’t exactly go hand in hand, but even though it leans more towards gaming’s lighthearted and fun side, adding a dose of genuine resource management would be fantastic.

So, instead of having access to an entire country’s arsenal just by reaching into our pockets, following the lead of Red Dead Redemption 2, which limits the number of weapons we can carry at any given time, would be an exceptional way to make the game’s shootouts more serious.

The system could be balanced by having heavy weaponry mounted on our vehicles, like horses, though only allowing us to carry a couple on our person, making each mission more challenging and giving it a higher stake.

Otherwise, GTA 6 will still allow us to be all-powerful entities, but as Arthur Morgan already demonstrated, feeling like human beings with limitations creates a campaign that’s much easier to connect with.

5 NPC Interactions

Connecting with the Environment

Wiping out a bunch of artificial life on the streets of America in a thousand different ways is entertaining, but I’ve always thought GTA has the potential to offer much more than just violence.

Red Dead Redemption 2 confirmed my long-held suspicions by demonstrating an open world can be made far more compelling and engaging by varying interactions with NPCs, preventing them from feeling like mere accessories to our journey through the city.

Threatening, bribing, greeting, challenging… The number of verbs I can think of to energize interactions with non-player characters is astounding, so I can’t imagine what the developers could come up with if they take it seriously.

Of course, it’s difficult to extrapolate given the increased size and density, though if they manage to create more ways to interact with NPCs, it would be an unprecedented feat.

4 Dual Wielding

Looking Cool is Also Important

For a franchise that bases much of its appeal on the use of firearms, Rockstar hasn’t explored the possibilities of combining them enough and truly allowing the player to express themselves through bullets.

4 Open World Games Reviewed Higher Than (Or Equal To) Red Dead Redemption 2

There are not many, but the few that did are equally remarkable!

While they did implement it many installments ago, the latest iterations of the franchise haven’t featured this mechanic, and experiencing it again in Red Dead Redemption made me realize how great it looks, regardless of its functionality.

Aesthetics also play an important role in the fantasy the player seeks to fulfill through the gameplay systems, and the ability to carry two pistols, two shotguns, or two SMGs can help make shootouts more than just a matter of aiming.

It might sound exaggerated, but especially after playing titles like Max Payne or GunZ, you acknowledge how much dual-wielding contributes to the combat atmosphere, providing a truly satisfying spectacle.

3 Wildlife

More than Humans and Concrete

While Grand Theft Auto V offered a considerable variety of animals, one of the greatest lessons its sequel can learn from its Western counterpart is the idea that they aren’t just another type of NPC but life forms in their own right.

The wildlife in Red Dead Redemption 2 feels detached from the player, like a genuine ecosystem functioning independently of our perception, rather than simply a collection of elements artificially subject to our gaze.

Having a wide variety and depth of species is excellent, though the goal should be to create believable environments where you feel you’re exploring nature, with beings that interact with each other and follow routines we can study.

Thus, instead of simply adding dozens more animals, the best decision might be to maintain the current number but increase the naturalness and complexity of our interactions with them, making the interactive possibilities more diverse.

2 Reputation

The Freedom to Choose

Red Dead Redemption 2 offers significant replayability thanks to its reputation system, which ensures our playstyle doesn’t go unnoticed by the game’s mechanics, creating greater immersion and a wider range of experiences.

GTA 6, being a game heavily tied to crime and activities with diverse social repercussions, should have an equally well-developed reputation system, allowing Jason and Lucia to make a name for themselves in the city based on their actions.

Gaining favor with specific groups, choosing to commit acts of vandalism while masking one’s face, or creating adversaries based on our affiliations would be excellent ways to immerse the player in the game world, pushing them to be more aware of each decision they make.

Accordingly, from shooting to completing certain side missions, stealing, or running someone over, actions will carry much more weight, lending genuine maturity to a series that often remains superficial.

1 Wanted System

Challenging the Power Structure

It has always bothered me that our relationship with authority in Grand Theft Auto is reduced to a momentary escape from their clutches, only to return to our routine as if nothing had happened.

The transient and inconsequential nature of police chases creates a gameplay loop where the player experiences no counterforce to their criminal activities, completely disconnecting any semblance of realism that the game’s universe attempts to generate.

It’s pointless to have impressive particle effects, photorealistic faces, and dynamic lighting if our passage through the world, however destructive or positive, leaves no lasting impact, except for the stars that accompany us for a few seconds during our escapes.

If a philosophy similar to that of Red Dead Redemption 2 could be implemented (a game where NPCs recognize Arthur, the police actively search for him, our identity as a criminal is publicized, and so on), it would be the greatest revolution GTA 6 could offer.

To be honest, if Rockstar could only implement one of all these changes, this would seem to me to be the most significant, and probably the only one that could turn GTA into more than just an arcade experience with a lot to do but nothing to delve into.

Rockstar’s masterpiece, even if it doesn’t seem like it, can also be surpassed.
