The next big video game movie is Mortal Kombat 2, and it comes out on May 8. But how much money is it expected to bring in? The studio behind the movie, Warner Bros. Discovery, is projecting $35 million from North America, but that’s likely a conservative estimate.
Tracking data unaffiliated with Warner Bros. projects Mortal Kombat 2 will bring in $40 million to $45 million during its opening weekend in North America where it’s being shown in 3,400 theaters.
Mortal Kombat 2’s main competition this weekend is The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is expected to earn between $38 million and $42 million for its second weekend. Exhibition sources told Variety that Mortal Kombat 2 and The Devil Wears Prada 2 could push higher, closer to $50 million each. That could happen for Mortal Kombat 2 if word of mouth is strong and if Mother’s Day has the expected impact for The Devil Wears Prada 2, the report said.
