You’ve heard of the Shibuya Incident, now feast your eyes on the NYC incident! New York City held its 5th annual Japan Parade over the weekend in Central Park West.

The parade aims to celebrate cultural ties and strengthen cultural exchange between the U.S. and Japan. Roughly a hundred groups, totaling about 2,700 people, took part in the parade.

There were martial arts and taiko demonstrations, mikoshi (portable shrine), traditional dances, maids, and geishas. The official mascot ‘happi’ also made its first public appearance, accompanied by its designer, and Grand Marshall of the parade, Acky Bright.

Popular manga/anime adaptation Jujutsu Kaisen The Stage was the final float and serves as the main highlight of the entire parade.

The cast, Geto Suguru (played by Fujita Ray), Gojo Satoru (played by Satoru Miura), and Fushiguro Toji (played by Kubota Yuki) fought off curse users right in the middle of Manhattan—recreating epic scenes from the fourth installment of the stage play adaptation.

The parade wasn’t the only festivity. A street fair took place along 72nd Street from Central Park West to Columbus Avenue that featured over 30 vendors and activities.

You could try on Yukatas, play traditional Japanese games, and even take photos with the official mascot. Food stalls were selling Japanese delicacies like Taiyaki, onigiri, Yakisoba, and more. Despite light showers, an estimated of 50,000 people attended.
