An official broadcast date was unveiled along with a new trailer for The Ghost in the Shell. Slated for this July, the latest reboot in the series will be produced by Science SARU, known for their incredible work on Dandadan, Heike Monogatari, and Ride Your Wave.
Originally a manga created by legendary mangaka Masamune Shirow, the Ghost in the Shell series has gone through several reboots and remakes since its first movie adaptation (no, we don’t talk about that movie.) back in 1995, over 30 years ago.
Back then, director Mamoru Oshii created a more dystopian cyberpunk world, tackling deeper philosophical themes of existentialism than originally portrayed in the manga.
However, this new reboot by Science SARU promises to be more true to the original. Judging by its art style, vibrant colors, and fanservice in the trailer, I am inclined to believe it.
The reboot will be helmed by director Moko-chan (Dandadan assistant director), with the script handled by award-winning writer EnJoe Toh, known for his amazing, and (in my opinion) very underrated work on Godzilla: Singular Point.
EnJoe Toh is a science fiction writer who won the Akutagawa Prize (Japan’s most prestigious literary award) in 2011 for his novel Doukeshi no Chou. He also contributed one of the short stories in the novel The Ghost in the Shell: Five New Short Stories published in 2017.
If you’re a fan of sci-fi, I highly recommend you check out Godzilla S.P. As far as script and story for this reboot is concerned, I trust it is in very good hands.
Other staff members involved with the project include, character designer Shuuhei Handa (Little Witch Academia) and composers Taisei Iwasaki (Kekkai Sensen), Ryo Konishi (City The Animation), and Yuki Kanesaka (Dr. Stone).
Unfortunately, Tanaka Atsuko, the original voice for the main character, Motoko Kusanagi, passed away in August 2024. Here’s the new trailer:
The Ghost in the Shell anime will premiere worldwide via Amazon Prime Video on July 7th and later domestically in Japan on Kansai TV, and Fuji TV.
