10 Tips and Tricks for Paralives’ Build Mode

10 Tips and Tricks for Paralives' Build Mode

I love cozy games that have building as their foundation, and have been an avid builder in The Sims 4 for years. The Sims 4 has dominated the genre for years now, but I can confidently say that Paralives’ Build mode more than stands on its own against The Sims 4 and has delivered one of the most powerful Build modes in the genre.

Paralives Is the Life Sim We’ve Been Waiting For

Return to the roots of the Life Sim genre.

Paralives’ Build mode has a lot of innovative tools that push your home builds further than ever before, and many of these tools and features are unique, making it feel new, easy, and refreshing to experiment with in-game. I haven’t managed to unlock the full potential of every tool, but here are some of the tools and features that I found the most helpful.

10 Curved Walls

Variation is Welcome

Creating a house with all straight walls is boring. Curved walls add some variation and, when the laws of physics don’t need to be obeyed, they add a lot of personality to any build, even if you go for a more restrained approach.

Using curved walls is very easy — all you need to do is place and drag. Paralives has also considered the challenge of placing roofs on curved walls, which is the point where they often fall short in life sims. At this point in time, there are no window options for curved walls, but Paralives’ devs have stated that they will be added in a future update.

9 Grab and Drag

The Ultimate Customization Tool

Rather than having several variations of the same furniture item, Paralives gives you the option to make the available ones as big or small as you want. All you have to do is click and drag. This actually goes a long way in making furniture placement easier, as you can just place one, say, a counter, and drag it for multiple copies, instead of having to individually place multiple copies of the same furniture piece.

Pretty much every object in Paralives can have its size adjusted by grabbing and dragging. This is by far my favorite tool in Paralives’ Build mode, and it gives builds so much potential. Windows, couches, beds, and counters benefit the most from this tool, but everything from trees to rugs and staircases can be adjusted with a simple click and drag.

8 Color Wheel

Create Anything

The color wheel is another tool that expands on Paralives’ Build mode, and that would have been a wonderful addition on its own, but it isn’t just colors that can be adjusted. You can alter the material and texture of each part of an item, essentially keeping the shape and turning it into something entirely new.

This adds so much variety to the objects that are in-game, and I found that they were essentially just limited by my imagination. The color wheel is a game-changer for players who enjoy color-coded legacy challenges or who simply want to create color-coordinated rooms where the colors match.

A New Tool with Endless Potential

This is a nifty tool that has a few functions that make some of the trickier parts of building easier. The primary purpose of the separator is to divide rooms without needing a wall, so you can place more than one kind of flooring per room.

10 Games For Interior Design Enthusiasts

If you enjoy putting up wallpaper and arranging knick-knacks, there are more than a few games that you’ll like.

Another way to use the separator is to create platforms, patios, and verandas. Use the separator to create a smaller room within the room, and lower and raise that section however you want. I like an engawa in most of my builds, especially as it emphasizes the entryway, and I’ve been experimenting with conversation and fire pits with great success.

New 3D Plants in Terrain Paint

A plot’s terrain is a defining part of many builds. You can use the terrain tool to raise the ground higher or lower than the foundations of your home, and the Terrain Painting tool has some gorgeous 3D grass and flower options so you can create beautiful gardens in just moments. Thanks to the color wheel, you can change the colors of the placeable plants and flowers to create the verdant paradise of your dreams.

Alongside the plants, you can also place rocks, which give a rustic feel and a welcome break in the green. All items in Paralives can be rotated in any direction, which is especially useful when creating interesting rock formations.

5 Upload Custom Images

Showcase Your Parafolks’ Personalities

Wall decorations reflect the personalities of the ones who live between them, and now you have full control over what goes on the walls of your Parafolk. You can upload your own images into Paralives and use them in swatches or as posters and framed images on the walls. Instead of being limited to preselected pictures or using the same five paintings in every household, you can upload images to create any kind of decor you want.

Uploading your own images is really easy. Just select the size you want in Buy mode, place the frame or poster onto the wall, and select “Add Image”. You’ll then get the option to upload a file from your computer.

4 Architectural Details

The Little Things Matter

The little details are what make a build really come together and elevate it from a lifeless building to a warm home or community lot. Paralives’ Build mode has an entire section called Architectural Details that includes tools that customize your build, like molding, window shutters, columns, window bars, and decals.

11 Best Games Like The Sims

For when your Sims’ Welcome Wagon overstays its welcome—here’s what to play next.

Many of these additional items, such as the window bars, are normal architectural features of homes, and it’s wonderful that Paralives has made it possible to faithfully recreate homes from all over the world. Having these items goes such a long way in representation, but it also means all Paralives players have more options to create innovative and interesting homes.

3 Gridless Building

Build Wherever You Want

Building on a grid is very limiting, which is why moveobjects and alt placement are two of the most popular build tools for The Sims 4 players. Paralives gives you the option to build with both, turning the grid into a feature you can toggle on and off.

Building on a grid is standard for a reason, as things can quickly dissolve into chaos in Live mode. But it’s wonderful to have the option here, and it opens up the potential for some really creative builds. I found turning off the grid to be especially helpful when placing foliage, wall decorations, and some clutter items, but turned it back on for bigger furniture pieces that benefit from snapping to a grid, like tables and chairs.

2 Layout Lines

Place Things Exactly in Line

Another great help is the layout lines, which help you align everything just so. As you can freely place windows and doors wherever you want, your build could quickly become a mess or an exercise in frustration because your windows don’t line up. However, while placing windows, lines will appear that will indicate where you need to place them to have them align perfectly with the other windows on that level, and on the level above or below it.

This helps you create builds that are nice and symmetrical. You can ignore them entirely, but I find that this restriction allows more freedom to place windows and other objects more creatively because it’s easier to make them look “right”, while you can mess around with the other characteristics, like sizing or color.

1 So Much Clutter

Turn Your House Into a Home

I try to avoid clutter in real life, but in life sims, it’s fair game. Clutter adds so much to my builds, especially any family homes I create. Clutter makes a home look and feel lived in, shows the individuality and personalities of the Parafolk who live there, and does the important but often overlooked job of filling space.

Using clutter is also a great way to showcase your creativity and make each build unique. As each clutter item in Paralives can be customized with the color wheel and its sizing, what you can do with clutter is virtually limitless.
